RATGHET SCREW DRIVER AND DRILL. No. 370,734.
UNITI-:n STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOIIIN FRYXELL, or MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
RATCHET SCREW-DRIVER OR DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,734, dated September 2'7, 1887. Application led April 11, 1887. Serial No. 234,4l1. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN FRYXELI., a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State ofIllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet Screw-Drivers or Drills; and I do hereby declare that thefoll lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe anneXed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure lof the drawings is a sectional view. of my improved ratchet screw-driver, showing a portion of the operating parts in elevation; Fig. 2, detail end views of the ratchet devices, and Fig. 3 a modification thereof.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of ratchet screwdrivers or drills, whereby they will be more easily operated, more effective and certain in their action, and less liable to get out of order, and also capable of being used in various positions.
The above objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the screw-driver proper, and B the holl low cast-metal handle, having exterior screwthreads upon its upper end to receive a cap, a, and interior screw-threads upon its lower .end to receive .the metal socket C, throug which the screw-driver A passes.
The handle B is formed with grooves b, extending spirally around the interior thereof throughout its'length, and within the handle is located a spiral spring, C, and also a plunger, D, having spiral threads c to engage with the spiral grooves b, said plunger having a short post, d, to form a guide for the spring. Ihe lower end of the plunger D has an interior ratchet, d', as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, and with this ratchet engages a pivoted pawl, e, upon a head, E, said pawl being retained in engagement with the ratchet by means of a spring, f.
rIhe screw-driver A passes up through the head E and through the plunger D, as shown, the screw-driver being secured to the head by means of the set-screw g, and should it be desired to use the screw-driver .in the ordinary manner, the screw-driver proper may be rendered'stationary by means of the set-screw h.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification of the ratchet devices, whereby the head E and pivoted pawl are dispensed with, also the ratchet d on the plunger D; and in place thereof I employ the two ratchet-sections t' k and spring l, located between the ratchet-section t' and plunger.
In the present instance the plunger D has no ratchetteeth, but' has a square shank, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, over which fits the ratchet-section z', so that it will turn with said plunger, and by its ratchet-connection with the section k it will turn it and with it the screwdriver proper. The same result is attained as in the construction shown in Fig. 1, and the operation ,is similar, and therefore I do not wish to limit my invention to any special form of ratchet device, as itmay be variously modified so long as it comes within ordinary mechanical judgment.
In the operation of my device, when pressure is brought upon the handle B, the plunger D, by the spiral threads thereon engaging with the spiral grooves of the handle, will as it is forced upward turn on its axis, and by means of the ratchet-connection between the plunger and screw-driver proper the latter will be carried around with it and held to its work.
When pressure upon the handle is removed, it will spring back by the expansion of the spiral spring therein, but the screw-driver proper will be held stationary, the slight resistance of the screw holding it from returning.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a ratchet screw-driver or drill, a hollow handle provided with interior spiral grooves, in combination with a plunger having exterior threads engaging therewith, and a suitable ratchet device connecting said screwdriver with the plunger, whereby said screwdriver or drillvwill be carried around or turned with the plunger and held to its work, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a ratchet screw-driver or drill, a handle having interior spiral grooves and a spiral ICG spring located in the handle, in combination In testimony that I claim the above I have with a plunger having spiral threads engag hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 1o ing with the grooves, and a suitable ratchet dcof two witnesses.
vice connecting the screwdriver proper with the plunger, whereby said screw-driver or drill will be carried around or turned with the Witnesses:
plunger and held to its work, substantially as OLIVER OLsEN, and for the purpose specified. C. L. MCLAY.
JOHN FRYXELL.
