Spencer Annear Attorney-Baldwin, Wight & Brown [57] 7, ABSTRACT Apparatus for continuous cooling of iron sinter'and other hot material in bulk comprising a base part, at
least two annular troughs supported on the base part for rotary motion about a vertical axis, said troughs being superimposed one above the other, each trough being open at the top and bottom to permit of introduction and flow through of material be discharge from the bottom thereofiand having a downwardly tapering section, means for introduction of material into the upper trough from which it passes into the lower trough to discharge therefrom and means for injecting cooling medium into the bed of material in each trough.
4 Claims, 1 Drawing Figure APPARATUS FOR COOLING nor MATERIAL IN BULK The invention relates to apparatus for the cooling of hot material in bulk and in particular of iron ore sinter with reference to which it is hereinafter described in detail. Continuously revolving or circulating sinter coolers are known in which the hot sinter from a sinter belt is deposited on an endless slat type conveyor moving on a circular track, or on a tub railway or the like, where it is cooled by air-drawn or blown through the material. Sinter coolers of this type are on the whole fairly satisfactory but their performance is limited to the extent of the floor area available.
This invention is concerned with providing apparatus for cooling of hot bulk material, in particular iron ore sinter, capable of handling a relatively large quantity of sinter to be cooled for a given floor area. This is of particular importance where the'overall diameter of the cooling installation of a sinter plant must be kept to a minimum because only a limited space is available.
Apparatus according to the invention comprises two or more troughs arranged one above the other and mounted to revolve about a vertical axis, means being provided for continuously feeding material into the upper trough and for withdrawing it from the lower trough and in which slots or openings are provided in the inner wall or walls of the troughs for introduction of cooling air or gas.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the apparatus comprises a central structure or framework supporting a series of annular superimposed troughs, each trough having a downwardly tapered cross-section and being open at the top and bottom so as to permit of gravity flow from one trough to the other.
In the inner side wall of each of the troughs is a louvre or a number of elongated, circumferentially spaced slots for admission of cooling air from a central chamber in the structure.
An embodiment of the cooling device according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawmg.
The cooling installation of this invention is generally indicated at l and is built up of a truncated conical wall portion 7 supported by a framework structure 17 connecting an upper beam 18 and a lower platform 19 having an inbuilt bearing housing 20 by which it is journalled to revolve about a vertical shaft 2. A ground support for the platform is provided by circumferentially spaced sets of wheels 3, at least one of which is driven by a drive transmission from motor 4, in engagement with tracks 23 on the underside of platform 19.
Material to be cooled is accommodated in a chamber provided by two annular troughs and 6, arranged one above the other. In the present embodiment the troughs are formed by an inclined internal wall 7 and outer wall plates 8 and 9.
Wall plates 8 and 9, which may be supported from the internal wall 7 in any conventional manner such as by brackets 24, as shown, for example, in US. Pat. No. 2,822,078, granted Feb. 4, 1958, are inclined in a direction opposite to wall 7 so as to enclose a chamber having across section in the form of an inverted cone. The troughs, which are open at the top and at the bottom, are vertically spaced so that the lower trough always remains substantially completely filled by the material running out of the upper one, due to the resulting angle of repose of the material, without the material being able to flow over the upper edge of the side wall 9 of the lower trough 6 (or troughs when more than two are provided).
The material to be cooled is continuously supplied from a chute 10, whence it passes into the uppermost of the two troughs 5 and 6 and is finally dischargedby one or several conventional stripper blades 25 which project into the bed on the bottom plate 11 below the bottom of trough 6 whence it is transferred to a conventional conveyor belt 26 or the like as disclosed, for example, in German Pat. No. 1,167,536 grated April 9, 1964.
Cooling air is introduced through a duct 12 terminating in a hood, whose lower end is joined to the closed inner space or chamber 13 by a water or other seal 15. From chamber 13 it passes directly into the troughs 5 and 6 through apertures in the wall 7, bounded by plates 14 arranged as louvres so it flows in an upwards direction through the troughs 5 and 6, opposite to that of the material, finally escaping throughthe material at its surface.
Although only a preferred embodiment of the cooling apparatus has been specifically. illustrated and described in this application, it is to be understood that minor variations may be made in the structural details of the cooling apparatus and the arrangement of the troughs thereof without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
We claim:

2;. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which the inner wall bounds a central chamber and means for connecting the chamber to a source of cooling medium.

4. Apparatus for cooling iron ore sinter and other hot material in bulk comprising a turntable mounted to revolve about a vertical axis, a superstructure on the table. supporting an inner wall in the form of a truncated cone, oppositely angled wall elements also on the superstructure and defining with said inner wall at least two directly superimposed troughs,-each trough having an opening at the top and bottom facilitating introduc-
