-APPARATUS FOR WIPIN G METAL COATED WIRE. No. 370,710. v a Patented Sept. 2'7, 1887;
IINVENIQR 5 ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES CHARLES E. MATTESON, OF EASTON,
PATENT OFFICE.
PEN N SYLVAN IA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO WILLIAM M. DOUGLASS, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,710, dated September 27, 1887.
Application filed September 4, 1886 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. MArTEsoN, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Wiping Metal- Coated Wire, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus for Wiping wire after it leaves the bath, to remove the surplus metal and give it a smooth surface; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a sectional elevation of one form of apparatus for carrying my invention into effect, showing, also, the bath of metal through which the wire passes.
A represents a cylinder or casing through which the wire B passes from the bath 0 to the drum D, the wire being guided to the cylinder or casing by the curved guide-block E. The cylinder or casing A and guide-block E are held in the proper relative position to each other by a suitable frame or table, E, to which they are attached. Above the cylinder A is held a circular service-pipe, F, provided with numerous jet-pipes or small openings, to a, each arranged to direct a jet of steam, air, gas, or other substance against the wire B. The pipe F is connected to the main pipe G by a branch pipe, I), and the pipe G is connected to a steam-boiler, air-blower, or compressor; or, if water is used, to a pump or water-forcing head or supply.
In action the wire B is drawn continuously through the bath 0 and cylinder or casing A Serial No. 212,714. (No model.)
by the drum or pulley D, and at the sametime 4o jets of air, steam, gas, or water are forced against the wire, the same issuing from the short tubes at. These jets entirely surround the wire and impinge upon its whole surface and effectually wipe the wire and give it 5 a bright and smooth finish.
I am aware that plates after leaving the bath have been passed through a pipe having an incased opening, the inner walls of which are perforated fordhe passage of air, so that both sides of the said plate will be subjected to the jets of air, and I am also aware that wires have been passed through tubes through which water is kept flowing, and I therefore do not claim such inventions.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for wiping metal-coated wire, the combination, with the casing A,
th rough which the wire passes, of the circular pipe F,.held a short distance above the top of the casing and provided with the inwardly and downwardly projecting pipes a, substan tially as herein shown and described.
2. In an apparatus for wiping metal-coated wires, the combination, with the frame E, the casing A, through which the wire passes, and the curved guide-block E, of the circular pipe F, above the casing and provided with the inwardly and downwardly projecting pipes 01, and the main supply-pipe G, to which the pipe F is connected, substantially as herein shown and described.
