Abstract

Heat exchangers of generally cylindrical shape, including structure having at least two chambers being wound on themselves in self-enclosing spirals, baffles forming passageways through said chambers to facilitate the flow of heat-exchanging media through said chambers in alternate centripetal and centrifugal relationship.

Claims (2)

1. Heat exchanger between two fluids, said heat exchanger being of generally cylindrical form comprising: a. two chambers wound in enclosing and juxtaposed spirals, a thin metal wall separating each of the two chambers from the adjacent one, said thin metal wall being provided with gofferings, the gofferings in one wall abutting against the adjacent wall; b. a central cylindrical tube, said chambers spirally encompassing said tube; c. an external cylindrical hoop concentric with said central tube, said central and external tubes both constituting the framework of the heat exchanger, the spirally coiled chambers being contained in the annular space between said central tube and said external hoop, the external cylindrical hoop extending beyond the level of the spirally coiled chambers; d. closure caps attached to said external cylindrical hoop so as to define two enclosures, each enclosure connecting directly with one spirally coiled chamber by the open lateral section thereof; e. partition means located in each enclosure dividing the latter into two capacities, respectively an inlet and an outlet; f. baffles formed of prismatic elements located in each spiral of the spirally coiled chambers, along the axis of said chambers and extending in the same plane as said partition means, said baffle elements being provided with a thickness corresponding to the spacing between two adjacent walls and being held in place by said gofferings, said baffle elements dividing the corresponding chambers into two parts, said baffle elements being shorter than the height of the spirally coiled chambers, so as to allow the fluid to pass from one part of the said chambers which is connected with the inlet capacity to the other part of the chamber which is connected with the outlet capacity.

Heat exchanger according to claim 1, wherein each said baffle element is tightly connected to the said partition means and is formed with a length adapted to leave a free passage in the bottom of the corresponding spiral of the chambers concerned, said passage being of a section equal to one quarter of the lateral section of the corresponding spiral.
