W. S. GRUMP.
TOY PISTOL.
VNO. 370,378. Patented Sept. 27. 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WALTER CHUM?. OF \V ESTFIELD, NFY YORK.
"'OY PISTOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nor-370,378. dated September 27. 1887.
Application filed Mu) "6, IFT.
To 0,22, whom it 11mg/ concern: 1
Be it known that l, Wamnu S. (lueur, of \Vcstficld, county of Chautauqua. and State of New York, have invented a new and useful 5 Improvement iu Toy Pistols, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to thcaccoml'iauying drawings, making part of this spceilicatiou.
M v invention relates to that class of toy pisio tels which are supplied with strips 0r tapes for carrying the e\plesivcs or caps continuously to the hammer; and my iuveutio: particularly relates, first, to the construction of the chamber for holding the strip or tape; sec- 15 ondly, to the provision of a removable plate. or cover for allordug access to the interior ol' the chamber; thirdly, to the form and arrange meut ofthe hammer, lhe objecis of my invention being to attain simplicity and compact eo ness of construction and certainty of operation.
To the above purposes my invention cousisls in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement relating to the parts above designated, as hereinafter particu- :5 larly described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In order that my invention may be fully uuderstood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in
Figure l is a side elevation of myimproved toy pistol with the cover for the chamber in raised position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, one of the half-sections of the barrel,
35 chamber, and the butt-frame beingr removed. Fig. Sis a side elevation o1' the pistol provided with a. modified l'oriu o1' cover for the chamber, the cover being also shown del-ached in face and edge views in sai ligure.,
In the said drawings, A designates the barrel, I3 the casing of the chamber, and C the butt, s uch parts being formed integrally in two hal sections extending longitudinally ol' the pistol and connected together by screws or 45 rivets a q1 the 'line of contact of said sections extending longitudinally through thc middle of the-pist Within the chamber is located a rib or partition, I' ,which is approximately ol U forni, 5o one cud cxtendingco the top ol' the chambereasing and lhll op) esile or rear end extending backward and upward nearlyto the lower cud Serial No. 230,431. (Nomodel.)
of a lug, bi', as shown. The rib b and lug l are formed integrally upon the inner face of the closed wall of the chamber. The stud b is also formed integrally upon the inner side ol' the said chamber-wall, and serves to receive and support t1 e spirally-wound tape or strip l), as shown.
E designates the removable over or cap of the chamber. In Fig. 1 this cover is shown as of rectangular form, to fit over an opening, c, of approximately-similar form in the side of the casing B opposite to its closed side. In this arrangement the cover slides between two lugs, b* b, which are formed on the. front and rcarmargins or edges of theopcuing c, and said cover has shoulders e' c' to retain it between the lugs. In Fig. 3 the cover E is shown as of circular or disk iowa and provided with two oppositel y disposed radiali v1-extending angular lugs, c, on its margin. In this instance the opening c is of circular form, and is provided with two radially-extending open slots, c, on its margin lo receivclthe lugs c of the cover. Thus it will be seen that in either form of the cover it may be readily removed for the insei-tion of the stri p or tape. Ribs eare formed on the outerfaee of the circular cover E, to afford a hold `ipon the cover in turuingit when removing or replacing the same.
F designates the trigger, which is pi voted upon a stud, f, formed integrally with the closed wall ofthe chamber, and the backward movement of which is limited by the stop'or stud f also formed integrally upon said wall. A straight spring, f, is provided for retracting the trigger, one end ol' said spring engaging beneath a shoulder, f, ou the upper end of the trigger, the opposite end of said spring engaging beneath a lug, f in the front part ol' said chamber, while the spring is sustained by a rib, f, near the lugf.
G designates the hammer, which is pivoted at its lower end upon a stud, g, and is thrown down by a flat motor-spring, y', the front end of which engages beneath a shoulder, gi, on the hammer. This hammer is of segmental form, asshown, and is couvcxcd on its rear or outer` edge, so that when down it shall nearly correspond with the general contour of the u pper part ol' the butt and chamber, whereby accidental cooking ot' the hammer is avoided.
lI designates the dog for feeding the tape lo the hammer. This dog is of V shape, and et its angle is formed with an enlargement, h, which enters a. rece, g, in the hammer. The upper end of this dog extends to the rear end of the rib b', while'its lower end is formed with a shoulder, h, beneath which engages t, e end of an arm or extension, F, of t-he trigger.
-A spiral spring, g, is interposed between the lower part of the dog H and th`e lower part of the hammer G, as shown. By virtue of this construction the' pistol is self cooking, and after the hhmmer falls the upper end of the dfog rises from beneath the rear end of the rib b and draws the tape backward toward the hammer, so as to bring a fresh cap into position to beeirploded.
-Thusjt will be seen that the pistol is simple, compact, `and durable in construction, and that its working parts are easily accessible and rapid in their action.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Thecombi nation, with the barrel A, chamber B, and stock C, constructed in two longitudinal sectionss described, of the U -shaped rib b', exteudingupward and rearward toward the hammer, substnutiail'y assnd for the purpose set forth. i
2. The combination, with thebarrelA, cham- 3o ber B, and stock C. of the turning plnteE, having lugs e2 and fitted removably into one side of the chamber, substantially as apd for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the barrel A, cham. 3 5 ber B, and stock C, of the hammer G, having the recess g, the dog H, having the extension h, the trigger F, having the extension F', the projection b", located in the upper rear portion of the chamber, and the spring g, interposed between the hammer G and dog H, substantially :island for the purpose specified.
4. The. combination, with the chamber and its rib or partition b', of the hammer G, the feeding-dog H, the trigger F, having the extension F', and the actuatingspring gl, interposed between the dog H and the trigger G, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5o my hand this 24th day of May, A. D. 1887.
