The aforesaid cup-shaped housing contains a mechanism supporting plate in the upper portion thereof on which is mounted two opposed arms having electrical contacts on one end thereof and a breaker cam follower projecting outward from one side of each arm and in contact with flat surfaces-interconnected by curved surfaces that are located on the periphery of a breaker cam that is mounted on the upper end of the aforesaid shaft. The aforesaid flat surfaces are in equal spaced relation around the breaker cam, and are not as long as the curved surfaces.
2 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures PATENH-il]um! 1 m2 'INVENTOR CESAR M GARZA l v DISTRIBUTOR FOR SIX CYLINDER INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE INCLUDING TWO CAM OPERATED CONTACT BREAKER ASSEMBLIES This invention relates to internal combustion engines; more particularly; to the electrical system of an internal combustion engine; still more particularly, to
' that portion of the electrical system that deals with the distributor for a six cylinder internal combustion engine that will permit the engine to continue to run at half of its power even though a pair of the contact points are out of orderand not working.
' Another object of this invention is to provide a distributor for a six cylinder internal combustion engine that is so designed as to have a longer working life than any other distributor now on the market, as will be understood by those experienced in the art, and as the reading of this disclosure proceeds.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a distributor for a six cylinder internal combustion engine of the character herein described that has a minimum number of parts so arranged as to permit servicing in a. minimum amount, of time. and with a minimum of effort on the part of the mechanic.
Other further objects and advantages of this invention will no doubt appear to those experienced in the art as the reading'of this disclosure and its appended claims proceeds and the accompanying drawing is examined in connection therewith.
In the drawing:
F 1G. 1 is a top view of this invention.
FIG. 2 is a side view of this invention with a portion of its housing and mechanism broken open in order to better show its internal construction.
In the two views of this invention, like parts of the device are indicated by like reference numbers. The reference number 5 indicates this invention in its entirety.
Directing ones attention first to FIG. 1 of the accompanying drawing it will be seen that this invention consists of a cup-shaped housing 6 that fits down over the upper end of a vertically disposed shaft 7 of an internal combustion engine. 'The aforesaid shaft 7 is rotatedby mechanism connected to the camshaft of the engine, usually by a shaft that also rotates the mechanism. .of the oil pump. A mechanism supporting'plate 8 is secured by two screws 9 inside the upper .end of the often-menotherwise the en e w ul no w rk l Th breaker cam foll v iiiar 12 o? eac ores i ni 10 i:
clearly shown in the alreadymentioned FIG. '1 of the drawing. The rest of the construction of this distributor is typical of other distributors already known to those experienced in the art and for this reason little or nothing more need be said of the detailed construction of this novel invention whose cap is not shown for reasons of clarity.
The way in which this distributor I have invented, and whose construction I have just described, works is asfollowsz t As the breaker cam 12 rotates, its long curved sections keep the electric circuit open at the contact point 15. Since the aforesaid long curved sections of the breaker cam 12 and the breaker cam followers 14 are diametrically opposite each other, thesaid cam followers will alternately contact a flat surface causing the corresponding contacts 15 to-close and reopen. Consequently, as the breaker cam 12 makes a complete rotation, each set of contact points at 15 close three times alternatively; therefore, they-contact six times at each rotation of the often-mentioned breaker cam.
'This invention is subject to any and all changes in detail design that one may care of make in so long as the changes fall within the scope and intent of the appended claims.
What I now claim as new is: v
1. A distributor for a six cylinder internal combustion engine, comprising a cup-shaped housing, structure for mounting said housing on an internal combustion engine, a vertically disposed shaft having one end extending into said cup shaped housing and rotatably mounted therein, structure at the other end of said shaft whereby the shaft may be rotated by said internal combustion engine, a breaker cam mounted on said one end of said shaft, said breaker cam having three equally spaced flat surfaces, two breaker arms each having normally closed contacts and a breaker cam follower extending perpendicular to its breaker arm, means for securing said breaker arms on opposite sides of said breaker cam with the said arms substantially parallel and the breaker cam followers diametrically opposite each other and in contact with said cam, the breaker cams being positioned so that each breaker arm closes and opens its contacts as a flat surface of said cam passes by.
2. The invention of claim 1, wherein the flat surfaces of the cam are shorter than the curved surfaces.
Claims (2)
