Mill Spindle.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. WILSON, OF GALESBURG, ILLIFOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MODE 0F TIGHTENING FOLLOWERS T0 MILL-SPINDLES.
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 36,975, dated November 18, 1862.
.To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. WILSON, of Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented a new a'ld useful Mode of Tightening Followers to Mill- Spindles; and I do hereby declare that the flllowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' the specification, in which Figure No. l is a perspective view. No. 2 is a view ofthe top ofthe bush, followers, and end ot' springs. No. 3 is an internal view of spindle, followers, spring, and bush.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the spring, B is the follower, C is the spindle, D is the bush, E is the nut.
The nature ot' my invention consists in placing an elliptical spring, having four bearings between the bush and follower, the upper end ofthe spring` passing over the upper end of the bush with an angle sufficient to give the pressure required, the lower end being furnished with a nut and screw, so that when the screw is turned up it draws the spring down into the wedged cavity, which gives the press ure required. Thus it vill be seen that I obviate the necessity of removing the stone for the purpose of tightening or loosening the followers, and that the springs will accornino date themselves to the pressure in case of ex pansion or contraction of the spindle. Incase it heats or expands, the springs will yield to the pressure and prevent the cutting of the follower or spindle. It will save much time and expense over any Inode now in use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe secured spring A, constructed as described, in combination with adjusting-nut E and follower B, when arranged and operated as and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE IV. Wl LSON.
