Description

E. GHIPMAN. GRUSHING PRESS.
Patented Oct. 20, 1868.'
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR. CHIPMAN, OF NEW YORK, N.Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRUSHING-PRESSES.
Spccification forming part 0!? Letters Patent No. 40,325, dated October 20. 1863.
required; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. side sectional view of myinn vention, taken the line :10 av, Fig. 2 Fig.2, a plan or top view of the same; Fig. 3, a front or end view of the lower partof the same; Fig. 4, a detachedside view of one of the adjustable ways pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to anew and improved press for crushing or pulverizing substances, and also forgiving a rollingpressure such, for instance, as is required in expressing moisture from articles or substances, and in giving impressions by means of dies, types, &c.
The object of the invention is to obtain a press for theabove purposes, which will be very ett'ective or have great power and still be capable of being operated with the greatest facility or by a trifling expenditure of power, and also be capable of being graduated so that the crushing-power may be varied or graduated as circumstances may require.
To this end the invention consists in the employment or use of a cylindrical or semicylindrical head or block provided with adjustable or sliding weights, and also provided with semicircular bearings having stops attached and working on adjustable ways secared to a bed, all being arranged insuch a manner as to effect the desired end.-
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and-construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a head or block, which may be of cylindrical or semi-cylindrical form, the latter shape being preferable. This head or block may be constructed of wood or metal. If the former material be used, itmay be constructed hollow or in shell form, and filled with any suitable material, B, to give it a reguisite degree of weight. -lf the head or block be of metal, it will probably possess sufticient weight without being filled, although, it'notsolid, itmay be filled. The bottom of the head or block is the round or curved part, and attach side of the header block there is an upright arm, a, on which a-sliding or adjustablc weight, 0, is fitted. These weights may be retained by friction only on the arnis a, or any suitable catch or fastening may be employed to hold themat any desired point on the arms.
To each side of the lower part of the head or block A there is attached a semicircular bearing, D. The ends of these hearings are extended outward a little, as shown atb b, Fig. 1, so as to raise thehead or block as it isrolled overat either end.
E represents a horizontal bed, which has a way orguide, F, attached to each side ot' it. These ways or'guidcs areeachformed of two longitudinal parts, 0 c, placed one over the other, and having their contiguous surfaces inclined, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. Each of the parts a c has an oblong slot, (7, made longitudinall y in it, and through the slots a screw, e, passes into the bed E. These screws e hold the two parts 0 c of the ways in proper position, and also hold the ways to the bed. The bearings. D D rest on the ways F, the rounded part otv the head or block projecting down a trifle'between the ways, as shown clearly iu'Fig. 3. To each bearing D, near each end, there is attached a button, G, of circular 'form, a segment being removed or cut off from each, so as .to leave a plane surface,
f. These buttons are attached to the sides of tho bearin gs D by screws 9, which pass eccentrically through them, as shown by the dotted 'lines in Fig. 1
The operation is as follows: Suppose, for instance, an article, or substance is to be crushed.- It is placed on the bed E, and the.
power, the bearings and ways keeping the head or block in proper position on the bed.
The substance or article on the bed E'is crushed by the action of the head or block,
I e g" g and the substance may be reduced .to a greater or less degree of fineness by adj ustin'g the two parts 0 c of the ways E-that'is to say, by drawing them longitudinally outward or inward, (see Fig. 4).-by which means the head or block may be adjusted at a greater or less distance above the surface of the bed E. At the termination of each movement of the head or block A the latter is raiseda' trifle' in con sequence of the projecting ends I) of the bearings D. This raising ofthe head or block is important in many eases, as it enables articles Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i s- 1. The cylindrical or semi-cylindrical head or block A, provided with the sliding or adjustable weights 0, fitted on arms a, in connection with a bed, E, all arranged substantiall y as and for the purpose herein set forth. 2. The bearings D, attached to the sides of the head or block A, in connection with the ways F on the bed E, for the purpose specified. 3. The ways or guides E, constructed of two longitudinal adjustable parts, 0 c, substantially as shown, in combination with the counterpoised head or bloclnfor the purpose specified. 4. The buttons G, attached to the bearings D, and constructed substantially as shown, for the purpose of holding the block in. an inelined position when tilted or turned on either end, as set forth.
