OAR COUPLING. No. 369,749. Patented Sept. 18, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC JEROME O. SOULEYRET, OF GREENWOOD, KENTUCKY.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369.749. dated September 13, 1887;
Application filed April 26, 1887. Serial No. 236,170. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEROME O. SOULEYRET, a native of France, with declared intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwood,in the county of Pulaski and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong and simple car-coupler, and the nature of the invention will be described below, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, the catch removed. Fig. 3 is adetail perspective view of the catch.
Like letters refer to like parts.
A is the draw-head, the square front opening, a, inclining inward to the catch-socket a, the side walls of which incline toward each other to conform to the sides of the catch B and to prevent lateral motion of the latter. Said catch is hinged loosely ona pin or rod, 1), passing through the oval front 0, the rod extending transversely across the upper part of the draw-head, and being'easily removed if the catch gets broken, permitting the latter to be taken out and another quickly inserted. To prevent the rod from jarring out, a button, 70, is provided. The oval front 0 plays in a corresponding groove, c, in the draw-head as it swings on rod 1). From the bottom of the catch B extends a circular tongue, 0, inclined on the back at d, and the floor of the catchsocket a has a depression, (1'. The front or stop of this, 6, corresponds to the front of the tongue,and the bottom to the under side of the tongue. The part 6 back of the tongue slopes gradually up to permit the latter to rise and fall easily.
D is the link-bar, having openings f sufficiently long to give slack for the pull when the engine starts. The elliptical ends 9 exothers can be quickly inserted.
tend about an inch beyond openingsf and enter a corresponding socket, f, back of the slope c. When the pull is on the bar D,there is about one-fourth of an inch of the end 9 in socket f, so that in drawing up catch B the tongue 0 cannot jam said end 9 up into the rear of socket a and prevent uncoupling. F is alever for lifting the catch. It is fulcrumed on a staple, h, outside of sloth in the drawhead. Thus if the staple or lever is broken The inner end of said lever plays looselyin a slot-,z',in the front of the catch. It is evident that in flat cars the lever may be operated by the hand or the foot, and in boxcars an attachment could be easily added to operate from the top. It will be seen that as the link-bar enters the cat-chsocket it strikes the incline l of the catch and lifts it, and when the end of said bar has passed by the tongue 0 the catch falls by its own weight, the tongue passing through opening fand into depression 11, and preventing the bar from drawing out until the catch is lifted. It will also be seen that the pull of the catch comes upon the concavity c and theinclin'e e, which permits the catch to endure great strain.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination, with the draw-head having catch-socket,substantially as described, fulcrum staple h, and slot h, of the lever F, the hinged catch, substantially as shown,having slot 'Ladapted to receive said lever loosely. and the link-bar D, having openings 9, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-head having a catch-socket with inwardly-sloping side walls and a depression in the floor, substantially as shown, of the hinged catch having sides corresponding to said walls and a subjacent tongue, the operating-lever, and the link-bar, with openings 9, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEROME G. SOULEYRE'I. Witnesses:
H. W. GRAGIN, OI-IAs. A. COTTERILL.
