Abstract

A garment hanger has a main frame provided with oppositely extending arms and a garment supporting bar connected between the ends of these bars. The hanger has another garment holding bar extending above the supporting bar. The holding bar may extend parallel to the supporting bar and may be swung at right angles thereto. This is accomplished by the use of a pin extending freely through the holding bar and having one end fixed to the supporting bar and the other end fixed to an adjacent arm. The opposite end of the holding bar is received and is enclosed by a holder fixed between the supporting bar and the other arm. The holder has an opening permitting the passage of said recessed end.

1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures GARMENT HANGER DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a garment hanger and refers more particularly to a garment hanger of the type having oppositely extending arms and a garment supporting bar connected between the ends of these arms.

Garment hangers of this type are in general use. Coats and the like are hung upon the arms of the hanger while trousers, skirts, etc. are folded over the supporting bar.

It is a matter of general knowledge that this use of the supporting bar is unsatisfactory since folded garments often slip off the bar and fall on the floor, particularly if the user has not taken the trouble to fold the garment so that the weights of the two folded halves are approximately balanced. If one half is substantially heavier than the other it will pull the entire garment off the bar.

Some attempts have been made to eliminate this drawback but they consisted of complicated and expensive clamping devices which did not find public approval.

An object of the present invention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive and easily operable device which can be used in conjunction with garment hangers of the prevailing type and which will provide a positive hold upon all types of garments, caused only by the weight of the garment itself.

Other objects of the present invention will become apparent in the course of the following specification.

In the accomplishment of the objective of the present invention it was found advisable to provide the garment hanger having the usual arms and garment supporting bar with a second garment holding bar adapted to extend parallel and above the supporting bar. This second bar is freely movable relatively to the supporting bar by being mounted with play upon a pin fixed to the supporting bar and one arm of the hanger. A garment may be conveniently wrapped around the second bar. To facilitate the wrapping of the garment the second bar may be swung upwardly away from the first bar and also may be swung at a right angle thereto. However, a lock is provided to hold the second bar in its operative position above the first bar. This lock consists preferably of a holder which is substantially U-shaped in cross-section and has two sides adapted to enclose a recessed end of the second bar. The holder is fixed between the first bar and the second arm of the hanger on the side opposite to that where the pin is located. One side of the holder is provided with an opening for the passage of the recessed end when the second bar is being swung at right angles to the first bar.

The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing showing by way of example only, a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.

IN THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a side view of a garment hanger constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.

The garment hanger shown in the drawing includes a air of downwardl and outward] diver ent arms 10 nd 11. The upper convergent ends of the arms carry a supporting hook 12. The lower divergent ends of the arms carry a supporting bar 13 which is firmly attached to these ends by nails or the like.

The above-described parts of the hanger are well known and in general use. In accordance with the present invention a second holding bar 14 is located above the bar 13. The bar 14 is preferably of the same width as the bar 13 and may be of lesser height. The lower end of the arm 11 has an angular recess 15 through which a pin 16 extends. The upper end of the pin 16 is fixed in the arm 11 while the lower end of the pin is fixed in the bar 13. The bar 14 has one end mounted upon the pin 16. However, the opening of the bar 14 through which the pin 16 extends is somewhat wider than the pin so that the bar 14 can Swing upwardly up to the top of the recess 17 provided at the lower end of the arm 10.

The bar 14 is held in its position above the bar 13 by a holder 18 fixed in the recess 17. The holder 18 may be made of metal or any other suitable material. It is essentially U-shaped in cross-section and has two parallel sides 19 and 20 and a transverse side 21 which may be used for fixing the holder to the arm 10 by screws or nails. The bar 14 has a recessed end portion 22 which fits with play between the sides 19 and 20. The side 19 has a recess 23 constituting an opening for the end 22 of the bar 14.

Thus in order to swing the bar 14 away from the bar 13, the user merely raises the free end of the bar 14, moves its end 22 through the opening 23 and then swings the bar 14 outwardly until it reaches a position extending at right angles to the bar 13. In that position the end of the bar 14 through which the pin 16 extends, will engage a side surface of the recess 15.

26 and 27 of the bar 14 which constitute the end of the main portion of the bar 14 and the beginning of its recessed portion 22. These flanges constitute an additional guide during the swinging movement of the bar 14.

I claim:

1. A garment hanger comprising in combination, two oppositely extending arms, a garment supporting bar connected to opposite ends of said arms, a garment holding bar, a pin extending between an end of one of said arms and said supporting bar, said holding bar having an opening adjacent one of its ends through which said pin extends with play, a holder fixed to an end of the other one of said arms and said supporting bar for holding the other end of said holding bar, said holder being substantially U-shaped in cross-section and having two spaced sides extending substantially parallel to said supporting bar, a middle portion fixed to said other arm and two angular flanges, said holder having a side opening located in one of said sides for the passage of said other end of the holding bar, said other end of the holding bar fitting between said two sides, whereby said holding bar can extend parallel to and above said supporting bar and can be swung about said pin away from said supporting bar, said other end of the holding bar being recessed, the main portion of the holding bar having transverse surfaces adjacent said recessed end, said angular flanges of the holder facing said transverse surfaces.
