Description

(No Model) I W. N. WHELESS.
PENCIL SHARPENER.
No. 369,270. Patented Aug. 30, 1887.
FY81 6 f 1 0614913 Q I 1 UNITED STATES WESLEY N. WHELESS, OF AUGUSTA, GEOBGIA.
PENClL-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,270, dated August 30, 1887.
Application filed July 16, 1887. Serial No. 244,498. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Bcit known that I, WnsLnY N. WHnLnss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Augusta, county of Richmond, State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in PencilSl1arpeners, of which the following is a full and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in pencil-Sharpeners; and it has for its objects to so construct the same that after the wooden portion of the pencil at its end is cut to the proper frustum shape the cone will be continued to the lead, terminating in a sharpened or finished point or apex; and these objects I effect by forming the pencil-sharpener at its smaller end with a passage or opening and continuing the cutting-blade beyond the same, so as to cross the apex of the sharpener at its longitudinal axis, and thus cut precisely to the point of the lead, as more fully hereinafter explained.
The subj cot-matter of the present invention was embraced in a previous application made by me for Letters Patent of the United States the 13th day of May, 1887, but has been eliminated therefrom, and I herein disclaim anything in said former application which is claimed in this.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 representsaperspectiveviewof myimproved device; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof; Figs. 3 and 4, longitudinal vertical sectional views of the device, taken through the center of the conical recess of the sharpener. Fig. 5 is a detached View of the sharpening blade; Fig. 6, a modification of Fig. 1; and Fig. 7, a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of the sharpener proper, as shown in Fig. 6.
In the drawings, the letter Aindicates a block or tube having a conical recess, B, the apex of which is provided with an inclined or enlarged opening, a. At one side of the conical recess, and extending nearly the whole length of the same, is a discharge slit or opening, d, and a knife-blade or sharpener, e, of sufficient length to project into the inclined or enlarged opening and cross the apex of the conical recess, so as to trim the extreme point of the pencil when operated thereon.
When the device is constructed of a solid block, as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, the opening at the conicalend extends obliquely, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, beyond the apex ofthe conical recess; but when of a conical tube or shell the said opening is in line with the axis of the conical recess, in either case the knife-blade being of such length as to extend across the apex of said recess, for the purpose before mentioned.
In the construction of a pencil-sharpener as herein described and claimed I propose to omit all parts not referred to by letter in the accompanying drawings, and to provide the block or tube with a ring-handle, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7, so that the device can be strung on a ribbon or ring, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A pencil-sharpener provided witha conical recess having an opening at its apex and a knife blade or cutter extending into or through said opening so as to cross the apex of the conical recess, and thus finish the point of the pencil, substantially" as specified.
2. A pencil-sharpener provided with a conical recess and a hole extending from the apex thereof and on a line with the side of the same to the rear end of the sharpener, a cuttingblade secured at one side of the conical recess and projecting into the hole at and across its apex, and a side opening for the discharge of the knife-cuttings, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
WESLEY N. YVHELESS. Witnesses:
W. H. FLYNN, T. T. Hxmnonn.
