To all whom it niay concern-.-
Be it known that we, JAMES H. KELLY and CHARLES H.BROAD,bOth citizens of the United States,- residing at the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State ofNew York ,have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Apparatus for Bending Tubes and Pipes; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, refer ence being had to the drawings accompanying this application.
Our improvement relates to means for bending tubes and pipes by placing the same on a grooved forming head or bed of the shape to which it is desired to have the tube conform when bent, inserting a rod into the end of the tube, and then sweeping a die over the forminghead, said rod being carried around the forming-head, thereby producing the bend in the tube.
The invention consists, essentially, of a form to which the tube is clamped, arod or mandrel which enters the tube and by which the tube is bent, and a carrier to which the rod is attached; also,of other parts,which will be more fully described.
In the drawings,Figure1 isa plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 4. is a front elevation of the grooved forming-head, the yoke,.the grooved die, and connecting parts. Fig. 5is a diagram showing a piece of tube with the rod therein,andi1lustrating the method of bending the tube.

D is a lever forming the die, the same being pivoted at g in a fork of the yoke,so as to have an independent turning movement therein. It is provided at the top with a handle,h, by which Its lower end reaches to the surface of the circular head A, and it is provided at the bottom with a half circular groove, to, which-embraces the upper surface of the tube. The yoke Oand die D sweep around the forming-head, as indicated by the full and dotby which it is operted lines, Fig. 3, and are accessory to the bending of the tube by therod, as hereinafter de-" scribed. The yoke and the die can be made in one piece and be operative, but are preferably made separate to facilitate the insertion and removal of the tube.
E is a rod which is inserted in the end of the tube, the inner end being carried to the proper position between the forming-head A and the grooved die D, as shown in Fig. 3. The outer end of the rod rests in a stirrup, G, that is attached at it to the sides of the yoke, by which means it is carried around with the yoke and die. The rod is held to the stirrup by any desired means, that shown in the drawings being j a nut, k, which screws up on a thread on the rod, and thus serves as a gage to adjustthe rod forward or back,to fit it properly between the forminghead and die. Any other suitable gage may be used for the purpose.
\Ve do not confine ourselves to the construction of the stirrup as described, as any other attachment that will carry the rod as fast as j the die moves around the forming-head or the tube is bent will suffice.
The operation is as follows: The tube islaid in the groove 0! and clamped in place, and the die D is turned down, so as to embrace it. The rod E is inserted in the outer end of the tube, so as'to bring theinner end of the rod in proper position between the forming-head and die. The yoke G and die D are then turned around the forming-head, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3. The inner end of the rod is drawn along inside the tube as fast as the thisrod acts as a bender of the tube, and the I die sweeps around the outside of the tube, and

It is not absolutely necessary to the practical working of this invention that a swinging yoke and die be used; but the work can be done by the rod inserted in the tube and properly held and made to sweep around the forming-head coincident with the bending of the tube, as described.
A plain straight rod will do the work practically and well; but to facilitate the operation, the rod is preferably made with an enlarged head at the inner end, where the bending takes place.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an apparatus for bending tubes and pipes, the combination of a form on which the tube is laid, a clamp for holding the tube, a rod or mandrel for bending the tube, and a carrier for holding the rod, as specified.
2. In an apparatus for bending tubes and pipes, the combination of a form on which the tube is laid, a clamp for holding the tube, a rod or mandrel for bending the tube, a carrier for holding the rod,and a die which sweeps around the form, as set forth.
3. The combination of a form on which the tube is laid, a clamp for holding the tube,a rod or mandrel for bending the'tube, a carrier for holding the rod,a die which sweeps around the form, and a yoke to which the die is attached, as specified.
4.. The combination of a form, aclamp, a rod or mandrel,a die, a yoke, and a stirrup attached to the yoke, said stirrup serving as a holder for the red, as specified.
5. In an apparatus for bending tubes and pipes, the combination, with a form, to which the tube is clamped, of a rod or mandrel attached to a carrier, said rod or mandrel entering the end of the tube and producing the bend by being drawn around the form, as set forth.'
