IMPROVEMENT IN BENDING METALLIC SPOUTS.

.To all whom t may concern:
Bc it known that we, E. VALENTINE and M. T. RInoU'r, both of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Bending Metallic Spouts; and we do hereby declare that the following is a `full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of our invention consists in the use of an elastic laminated core or mandrel, in connection. with a swaging apparatus, for the purpose of quickly and accurately bending metallic pipes or spouts for tea-pots, coffee-pots, &c.
A bench or table composed of the top A and legs B receives and supports the respective parts of our machine for bending metallic pipes or sponts. Secured to and rising from this table A are the following parts of our niachine, viz: the uprights C C and l), the guiding and cont-rolling are E, the longitudinal guiding-block Fin the vertical plane of the arc E, and the longitudinal shaping-block G, running parallel with the arc E and block F, as represented in Figs. l, 2, and 5 of the acconipanying drawings. The upright D is made to terminate in a pin, a, which receives and serves as a pivot for the inner end of the leverarin H, which vibrates horizontallyT upon the supporting-bar c, placed upon the uprights C C. To this horizontal lever H is jointed the core or mandrel J, which rests upon the upper surface of the forming and shaping block G. The end of this shaping-block G farthest removed i`roni the horizontal lever H is curved in. the form` to .be imparted to the metallic spout. A transverse aperture 'is made in the bench A at a point corresponding with the intersection of the curved end of the shapingblock with its upper straight surface. This transverse aperture terminates at the base of the outer face of' the shaping-block G on the one side, and of the guiding-block F on the other, and coincides accurately with equal vertical apertures or notches d, Fig. 2, formed opposite to each other in the said blocks. These vertical notches in the blocks F and G forni bearings for the ends of a sliding journal-box, K, Fig. 4, which plays freely up and down therein through this transverse aperture. This sliding journal-box is supported in an elevated position by the spiral spring L, the lever M, and the bridle-piece N, or their equivalents, all secured under the bench A, as is represented in Fi g. 4. The resistance of the spring L may be overcome and the journalbox K, with its attachments, be forcibly drawn down by means of a treadle, P, and connect ing-rod O. 'Its descent', however, is arrested by the stops Q (DI on the outer faces of the blocks F and G, which stops catch and enibrace the ends oi' the pin c, upon which is jointed (within the journal-box K) the main swaging-lever R. This main lever R vibrates freely in the longitudinal space between the parallel blocks-F and G, although made to fit closely therein, as represented in Fig. 3. The vibratory movement of this main lever is arrested by the stopsf and j', fixed upon the eontrolling-arc E.
Upon that face of the journal-box K more remote from the curved end of the shapingblock G is secured an upright retaining-hook, S, which is made to bend over the upper surface of this shaping-block G, as represented in Fig. 5. A grooved swaging-wheel, T, is firmly attached to the front face ofthe main lever lt, directly over the shaping block G, by
means of the embracing-box g, which is coinbined with sliding bar, t', on the opposite side ofthe lever, as represented in Figs. Sand 4. The shank lr, which projects from the inner side of the embracing-box g,passes through a longitudinal slot, m, Fig. 4, in said lever It,
and is fastened and secured to the sliding bar i' by a key or other suitable device. The inner j onrnal projection of the swaging-wheel T also passes freely through a second longitudinal slot, fn, Fig. 4, in the lever R, and is supported bymeans of a `journal-aperture in the lower end of the sliding bar fi, while the outer journal projection is similarly supportedin the lower end of the embracing-box g. An elastic baud, p, of india-rubber or other suitable material, is secured tc the hook S, which dia-rubber or other elastically yielding material, the whole rmly secured to a suitable head, s; or this mandrel may be madein asolid piece of any substance possessing proper elasg ticity and solidity for the purpose required.
The mode of operating our improved machine is readily described as follows, viz: The core or mandrel J is thrown forward bythe actuating-lever H until its end projects over the curve in the shaping-block G a distance equal to the length and extent of the curve desired in the spout to be-bent. It is retained in this position by means of a pin, Z, inserted in the supporting-bar `c. Atube of tin or other-metal of the required size, length, and taper, is then slipped over and upon the mandrel J, andby means of the treadle P and the slidingjournalboX K the hook S and the sWaging-wheel T are brought to bearfirmly upon the upper surface of the tube,which is thereby pressed closely against the elastic surface of the shapingblock beneath it. By a movement of the mai n lever R the s\\'aging-w'heel is then carried ferward, as represented in Fig. 2, bending the tube asv it passes over it, the perfect regularity of its curve being secured and the evenness of its surface preserved by the resistance of the velastic core or mandrel J Within, in connection Y with the elastic band p and cushion r without,
the tube. The tube or spout beingthus easily and accurately bent in the desired shape, the core J is readily removed by a reverse movement of the actuating-lever H, and by relieving the treadle P from the pressure exerted thereon the retaining-hook S and swaging-l Wheel T are elevated and the finished spout at once released from the machine. These movements may all be executed with great rapidity and ease, thereby savingmuch labor, while producing cheaply a superior manufacture.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, is-
1. The use of an elastic core or mandrel in the manufacture of curved metallic pipes or spouts, substantially in the manner hereinbefore set forth.
2. The use of a series of thin elastic metallic plates in the construction of acore or mandrel for the inflection of metallic spouts, substantially in the manner herein'set forth.
3. lVhen an elastic core or mandrel is used in themanufacture of curved metallic spouts, the-use of a shaping-block, G, a retaininghook, S, and a lever-actuated sWaging-wheel, T, or their equivalents, when combined and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
l 4. Vhen a lever-actuated sWaging-wheelT and shaping-block G are used in the inflection of metallic spouts, the use 0f an elastic protecting-band, p, and elastic cushion r, or their equivalents, when combined and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
