Abstract

For the especial use in supplying and supporting a web of transfer paper for transverse feed across the record webs of an autographic register, an extruded thermo-plastic hollow cylinder is provided for holding a roll of transfer paper, the wall of the cylinder being interrupted and terminating in two flanges extending in close parallel relation tangentially of the cylinder, the flanges adapted to resiliently grip the web as it issues from the cylinder to restrain the web from creeping and buckling.

2Claims,3Drawlngligures Patented Aug. 29, 1972 2 Shuts-Inuit 2 CONTAINERS FOR TRANSFER MATERIAL WEBS This invention has reference to containers for transfer material webs and has particular but not exclusive to containers for webs of carbon paper for use in autographic registers.
In autographic registers it is known to provide mechanism for feeding a web of carbon paper transversely of the direction of feed of the record paper webs fed longitudinally of the Autographic Register. The carbon paper is fed from a housing on one side of the Register by feed rollers on the other side of the Register.
In another arrangement a transfer web is fed from a roll in a container on one side of the writing plate of the Register and is clamped between a flange at the other side of the writing plate and pivoted blade. When the section of the transfer web interleaved between the record webs is becoming exhausted of transfer material the pivoted blade is released and a further length of transfer material is pulled through the record webs from the container.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved container for a transfer material web and in particular to provide a container which is especially suited for receiving a web or webs of carbon transfer material for use with an Autographic Register.
According to the present invention a container for a Transfer material web comprises a sheet of thermoplastics material which is formed to provide a circular part to receive the web with overlapping flanges between which the web is pulled.
Preferably the sheet of thermo-plastic material is formed as an extruded section to provide the tension to grip the transfer material web between the overflapping flanges.
A container for a carbon roll for use in retaining a web of carbon transfer material for use in an Autographic Register will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:-
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the holder for the carbon transfer web,
FIG. 2 is a detail view of a modification and FIG. 3 is a perspective view of an autographic register with a holder in position.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings a holder I for a carbon transfer web is comprised of a sheet of thermo-plastics material such as polyethylene which is formed as an extruded section so that in cross section it includes a circular part 2 and a pair of overlapping flanges or lips 3 and 4. As shown the upper flange 3 extends beyond the lower flange 4 which flange as shown extends in a substantially tangential direction. It is arranged that these flanges are urged towards one another by the inherent resilience of the sheet holder.
When the holder 1 as shown is to be used to retain the roll 6 of carbon transfer material to be used with an Autographic Register, the two flange 3,4 parts are urged apart and the carbon roll 6 is located within the circular part. The leading end of the web is then pulled between the two flanges 3 and 4 while they are spaced apart manually so that it protrudes from between the two flanges. The holder 1 with the leading end of the carbon web protruding from it is then dropped into a trough housing 10 (FIG. 3) at the side of the writing plate of the Autographic Register in such a way that the upper edge of the writing plate 5 lies underneath the lower flange, as illustrated in chain dotted lines in the figure. The carbon web 6 is then pulled transversely across the writing plate and interleaved with the record webs II in the usual manner. The leading end of the web 6 is clamped at the remote side of the writing plate by a pivoted clamping bar 12. The record webs II are pulled across the writing plate- 5 by rotational movement of the feed pins 13 being engaged in feed perforations at the head of each form length. The feeding of a form length is halted on the next set of feed perforations engaging with the pins 13. As the record webs are fed through the Autographic Register between the transfer webs 6 the tension on the carbon transfer web is maintained because the tension in the web tends to rotate the web and bolder (clockwise as shown in FIG. 2 of the drawings) so that the flange 4 is urged against the writing plate 5 whereby the web is gripped between two flanges and when the tension in the transfer webs increases the tighter the web is gripped between the two flanges by virtue of its being urged against the top side of the writing plate.
In a modified form of the invention the end of the upper flange 3 is disposed above the end of the lower flange 4 and the end of each of these flanges is curved outwardly to form a V-shaped pair of lips.
Although the container has been described as receiving a roll of a single web of transfer material which is to be used interleaved with two record webs the roll may have two or more transfer material webs to be interleaved with three or more record webs.
By this invention we are able to provide an improved container for transfer webs more particularly for Autographic Registers whereby the operator can conveniently load the transfer webs initially within the Register and subsequently relocate the webs in the Register without unduly soiling her hands.
What I claim is:
I. An autographic register comprising a supporting frame, means for feeding a plurality of record webs of business forms across said frame in a longitudinal direction, and a container at one side of said frame for housing a transfer web and from which said transfer web may be fed transversely across said frame present successive portions thereof into interleaved relationship with said record webs and means for temporarily securing the free end of said transfer webs, said container comprising a sheet of thermo-plastic material extruded in the form of a hollow cylinder to receive the web in the form of a roll, the wall of the cylinder interrupted at one point in its circumference and the resulting adjacent ends of the wall formed as parallel flanges extending tangentially with respect to the cylinder proper, between which flanges the transfer web is pulled, the extruded cylindrical structure having sufficient resilience to urge said flanges toward each other to yieldably grip the web between them whereby the transfer web is retained in said interleaved relationship with the record webs without being displaced or buckled by the friction of the feeding movement of said record webs.
2. A dispensing container for use in the crossfeed of a web of transfer material, especially suited to exert restrained release of the web to inhibit creeping or buckling in use with record webs in an autographic reformed as parallel flanges extending tangentially with respect to the cylinder proper, between which flanges the transfer web is pulled, the extruded cylindrical structure having sufficient resilience to urge said flanges toward each other to yieldably grip the web between them.

Claims (2)

1. An autographic register comprising a supporting frame, means for feeding a plurality of record webs of business forms across said frame in a longitudinal direction, and a container at one side of said frame for housing a transfer web and from which said transfer web may be fed transversely across said frame present successive portions thereof into interleaved relationship with said record webs and means for temporarily securing the free end of said transfer webs, said container comprising a sheet of thermo-plastic material extruded in the form of a hollow cylinder to receive the web in the form of a roll, the wall of the cylinder interrupted at one point in its circumference and the resulting adjacent ends of the wall formed as parallel flanges extending tangentially with respect to the cylinder proper, between which flanges the transfer web is pulled, the extruded cylindrical structure having sufficient resilience to urge said flanges toward each other to yieldably grip the web between them whereby the transfer web is retained in said interleaved relationship with the record webs without being displaced or buckled by the friction of the feeding movement of said record webs.
2. A dispensing container for use in the crossfeed of a web of transfer material, especially suited to exert restrained release of the web to inhibit creeping or buckling in use with record webs in an autographic register, said container comprising a sheet of thermo-plastic material extruded in the form of a hollow cylinder to receive the web in the form of a roll, said cylinder being open at the ends thereof whereby the roll of transfer material can be inserted therein, the wall of the cylinder interrupted at one point in its circumference and the resulting adjacent ends of the wall formed as parallel flanges extending tangentially with respect to the cylinder proper, between which flanges the transfer web is pulled, the extruded cylindrical structure having sufficient resilience to urge said flanges toward each other to yieldably grip the web between them.
