MANIFOLD FOR WATER-TUBE OILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,612, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed March 3, 1887.

Be it known that I, N AT. W. PRATT, a citi-A Zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolds for NVater-Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of manifolds or tube-headers for use in connecting together the series of water-tubes of sectional steam-boilers; and the said invention consists in certain novel features of said construction as applied either to corrugated or other shaped headers, whereby the same are manufactured from wrought-metal plates.
In order toA enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe in detail the manner of its construction, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a completed header; Fig. 2, an end view of the same; Fig. 37 a cross-section of the same on the line x a, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a front elevation, partlyin section, of the invention embodied in a modified form of header; Fig. 5, a side view of Fig. 4; Fig. 6, a front elevation of a second modifica tion of form; Fig. 7, a side view of Fig. 6; Fig. 8, a front elevation of a third modifica tion of form; and Fig. 9, a side view thereof.
The periphery A of the several manifolds herein shown is composed of a' single piece formed by bending a band of metal or a bar into the required shape and joining the ends, preferably by welding, so as to form a continuous strap.
To the interior margins of the strap A the plates B and D, having the required form and provided, respectively, with perforations b and d, are fixed in position, as shown by Fig. 3, and welded about their edges to said margins, being of sufficient thickness for the purpose.
The circular perforations d in the plates D are for the reception of the water-tubes, to be fixed therein by the expanding or other wellknown process. The oblong perforations b of the plates B are suitably shaped for the introduction of hand-hole plates opposite the tubeperforations these perforations being substantially as described.

The end surfaces of the strap A, Figs. 1, 2, 3, are provided with pcrforations c for the reception of tube-connections.
The manifolds (shown by Figs. 4 to 9 inclusive) arev made to connect in series, as indicated by dotted lines,the adjacent sides thereof being connected by means of nipples f, fixed into the perforations c.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The method of making wrought-metal manifolds for watertube boilers, consisting in first punching from a plate two sides and either at same or subsequent operation making perforations therein; second, forming a strap of proper shape to surround said plates, and, third, welding the said plates therein, substantially as described.
2. The method of making wrought manifolds for water-tube boilers, consisting of first bending a plate or bar into form for the periphery, and subsequently welding therein top and bottom plates, substantially as de scribed.
3. A wrought-metal manifold for a lwatertube boiler of box form, having the periphery, the top, and the bottom made of separate pieces welded together, with one side perforated for the reception of tubes and another side perforated for hand-holes, substantially as specified.
4. A wroughtmetal manifold for a watertube boiler of box form, having the periphery, the top, and the bottom made of separate pieces welded together and perforated for the reception of tubes,l substantially as specified.
5. A wrought-metal manifold for a watertube boiler of box form, havingtheperiphery, the top, and the bottom made of separate pieces welded together, substantially as specified.
6. A wrought-metal manifold for a watertubeboiler, consisting of a strap bent into shape to form the periphery, with perforated plates welded into the top and bottom thereof,
