Franco 5 7 ABSTRACT A simulated hairline for a wig, toupee or other hair- 1151;; 3,683,941 451" Aug. 15, 1972 piece is provided. The simulated hairline includes a flesh colored member which is made from a reticulated material such as lace, netting or mesh and which has hair secured thereto in spaced relation and an elastic band which is secured to opposing sides of the reticulated member and is adapted to be extended about a person's head for compressively engaging the reticulated member with the person's scalp so that portions of the scalp will be forced into the pores of the reticulated member establishing a substantially smooth surface therewith. A hairpiece including a foundation having hair applied thereto and having a front hairline edge portion is secured to the persons head with the front hairline edge portion proximate the reticulated member and with at least a portion of y the reticulated member located intermediatethe front hairline edge portion of the foundation and the wearers face. When secured to the wearers head, the foundation encloses the elastic band and the opposing sides of the reticulated member. The presence of the reticulated member is accordingly completely concealed and the hair of the simulated hairline appears to be growing out of the persons scalp, When the hair of the simulated hairline is combed away from the persons face and into the hair of the foundation a natural hairline is provided for the hairpiece.
10 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures Patented Aug. 15, 1972 INVENTOR. KENNETH FRIEDLAND ATTORNEY HAIRPIECE WITH SIMULATED HAIRLINE This invention relates to hairpieces such as wigs or toupees as are disclosed in my copending application Ser. No. 42,613, filed on June 2, 1970, now abandoned and more particularly to simulated hairlines for such hairpieces.
The hairline of a hairpiece must either be concealed or appear natural if the hairpiece is to be commercially acceptable. In most hairpieces the hairstyle is choosen so that hair will be combed down across the hairline to conceal the hairline but this precludes those people who require an off the face hairstyle, which would expose the hairline, from utilizing such-a hairpiece.
Where the hairstyle exposes the hairline, the hairpiece may include a hairline simulating member. This member may be integral with the hairpiece foundation and generally includes a reticulated member, a naturally opaque, flesh colored plastic lamina which is secured thereto and hair which is secured to the reticulated member and passed through the plastic lamina. The hairline simulating member is conventionally secured to the wearers scalp by a liquid adhesive with the reticulated member being positioned between the opaque flesh colored lamina and the persons scalp. Since the reticulated member is glued or adhesively secured to the persons scalp it rests on the scalp with the outer surface of the reticulated member being spaced from the scalp by an amount substantially equal to the thickness thereof. The reticulated member is thereby noticeable even if flesh colored and the opaque, flesh colored lamina is required to conceal the presence of the reticulated member. Cosmetics are often applied to the opaque, flesh colored lamina in an attempt to better conceal its presence on the persons scalp.
It is accordingly the principal object of the present invention to provide a simulated hairline for a hairpiece including a flesh colored reticulated member having hair ventilated thereinto which is adapted to be secured to a persons scalp in such a way as to become a part thereof whereby it will not be necessary to conceal its presence thereon by the utilization of an opaque, flesh colored lamina secured thereover.
Among the advantages of the present invention is the provision of a hairpiece including a simulated hairline member which is non-adhesively secured to the wearers scalp by means of an elastic band joined to opposite sides of the member and extending about the wearers head.
Another advantage of the present invention is the provision of a hairpiece which has a simulated hairline member which need not be cleaned to remove glue or the like therefrom after each usage thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following portion of this specification and from the accompanying drawings which illustrate, in accord with the mandate of the patent statutes presently preferred embodiments incorporating the teachings of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
FIG. I is a front view of a womans head with a hairpiece made in accordance with theteachings of the present invention thereon;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to that of FIG. 1 with the foundation of the hairpiece removed from the womans head;
FIG. 3 is a view of the hairpiece illustrated taken along the hairline thereof.
Referring to the drawings and initially to FIG. 1 a hairpiece 10 secured to a persons head and made in accordance with teachings of the present invention is illustrated. While for illustrative purposes a womans wig is shown the teachings of the present invention can be appliedto any hairpiece whether a wig, toupee or the like and whether it is to be worn by a woman or a man. the hair 12 of the hairpiece or foundation 10 may be shaped to simulate any desired hair arrangement. For example, the. hair may be swept away from the face, as illustrated, exposing a portion or the entire hairpiece hairline 14. The snug fit of the foundation may be assured by the utilization of a foundation sheath 16 made from a resiliently stretchable or elastic fabric.
The hairpiece also includes .a hairline simulating member 20 which as illustrated in FIG. 2 may be completely separate from the foundation. The hairline simulating member includes an elongated reticulated strip 22 which preferably is flesh colored and is made from a material such as mesh, lace, or netting. Hair is secured thereto in spaced relation such as by ventilating same thereinto. The ventilated hair may be maintained at any angle or angles so as to conform to the angle or angles of the hair of a foundation piece in FIG. 1
combed in a specific hair style so that when both are proximately positioned on the persons head the hairline simulating member hair can be combed smoothly into the hair of the foundation.
While hair is ventilated into the entire reticulated member, such is not necessary. The upper and side marginal areas thereof could consist solely of the reticulated material. The foundation would therefore, when secured to the wearers head, overly these baren areas of the reticulated material and would thereby enable the efficient merging of the foundation with the hairline simulating member. The size and shape of the reticulated member 22 as well as the hairline configuration will depend upon the hairstyle of the hairpiece as well as the natural hairline configuration (for example a widows peak) of the wearer thereof. The length of the hair ventilated thereinto will also depend upon the hairstyle of the hairpiece.
The hairline simulating member is maintained on the wearers head by an elastic band 30 which extends around the persons head from one of the short ends of the elongated reticulated member 22 to the other short end thereof. I
The tension existent in the stretched elastic band 30 gently urges the reticulated member into compressive engagement with the wearers scalp which results in portions of the scalp being gently forced into the pores of the reticulated member establishing a substantially smooth surface therewith. The flesh colored reticulated member therefore becomes a part of the scalp and accordingly becomes completely invisible.
The length of the elastic band can be varied with head size or the elastic band may have an adjustable length so that the pressure exerted by the hairline sim ulating member against the forehead can be selected to achieve optirnium appearance thereof.
As canbe seen from FIGS. 2 and 3 the wearers hair is suitably combed and gathered prior to securing the hairpiece to the persons head. The hairline simulating member 20 is then placed in position preferably with at least a portion thereof extending beyond the persons original or natural hairline so that it overlies the persons scalp.
The foundation is then pulled onto the persons head with at least a portion of the simulated hairline member being positioned intermediate the foundation hairline 32 and the waerers forehead. The reticulated strip 22 is selectively configured so that when it and the foundation of the hairpiece are secured on the wearers head the ends thereof as well as the elastic band which is secured thereto will be completely enclosed by the foundation.
With the hair of the hairline simulating member being fastened to the reticulated member at an angle conforming to the flow of the hair on the foundation styled as desired, the hair of the hairline simulating member can smoothly combed thereinto. The hair of the hairline simulating member thereby appears to be growing out of the persons scalp and when combed away from the persons face and into the hair of the foundation a natural hairline is provided for the hairpiece.
While the hairline simulating member has been illustrated in conjunction with a foundation such as a wig or a toupee it could also be utilized as a hairline for people who do not require a foundation member, for example, for those people who have a slightly receding hairline. For such people the hairline simulating member could be worn with the elastic band and the ends of the reticulated member being concealed by the wearers own hair.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
