Description

O. KRUEGER.
STUMP FULLER.
(No Model.)
Patented Aug. 16, 1887.
l htmeo xeo Mi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KRUEGER, OF \VAUSAU, WISCONSIN.
STUMP-PULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,216, dated August 16, 1887.
Application filed June 14, 1887. Serial No. 241,289. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KRUEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vausau, in the county of Marathon and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stump-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stump-extractors; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stump-extractor. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the spool and supporting-plate for the end of the sweep.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A A A designate the supporting-legs, which are braced by suitable beams, B, as shown. The rear legs, A A are provided with rollers O at their lower ends, while the front leg, A, is provided at its lower end with a shoe, D, which allows it to be drawn over the ground, but at the same time prevents its sinking into the same when the device is in operative position. At the top of the tripod formed by the legs A A A I provide the plate E, having the sleeve F depending from its under side. This sleeve F has the recesses G in its outer side, in which the ends of the legs are secured. The edge of the plate E projects slightly past the side of the sleeve F, and is engaged by a series of lips or plates, G, secured to the casting H, to which the end of the sweep or operating-lever I is secured. To the under side of the sweep, at the upper end of the same, I secure a plate, J, which projects .under the edge of the plate E and aids the plates G in holding the sweep thereto and giving it a smooth easy motion. The casting H has a central angular opening, through which the upper angular end of the shaft K projects. The central portion of this shaft K is cylindrical, and its lower end is screw-threaded and works th rough a screw-threaded sleeve, L, set in a cross-beam, M, secured to the bracebeams B.
At a point, N, on the rear side of the front leg, A, 1 Secure the pulley O. The operatingrope P has one end secured to the leg A a short distance below the pulley O, and after passing over said pulley has its other end secured to the shaft K.
Q designates a pulley loosely mounted on the rope P between the pulley O and the end of the rope, and provided with a hook, R, to engage the stump.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
' it is thought the operation of my device will be readily understood.
It will be observed that when the shaft K is revolved it will rise, owing to the screwthreadcd construction shown and described, thereby causing the operating-rope to wind smoothly and evenly upon the same and preserving an even and regular tension on said rope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the supportinglegs, the sweep, the vertical shaft extending through the top of the legs and the sweep, and adapted to rise therethrough when rotated thereby, the rope having one end secured to the shaft and its other end to the rear side of one of the legs, its intermediate portion passing around a pulley, O, secured to said leg, and a hook, R, carried by a pulley loosely mounted on the rope, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the supporting-legs, the plate E at the top of the same having the depending sleeve F, the sweep, the casting H, to which the sweep is secured, and the plates secured to said casting and engaging the edge of the plate E,and the shaft K and operatingrope, as set forth.
3. The combination of the supporting-legs, the cross-beam having a sleeve, L, therein, the sweep, the casting H at the top of the legs, to which the sweep is secured, provided with an angular opening, and the shaft K, having an upper angular end passing through the angular opening in the casting H, and a lower screw threaded end working in the screwthreaded sleeve L, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES KRUEGER.
IVitnesses:
CHAS. V. BARDEEN, LOUIS K. WRIGHT.
