5o nally connecting these rings are a series of the outer curved ends of each set of which are 1 UNITED STATES DANIEL HEss, or H COTTON CLEANER ENDERSON, TEXAS.
AND CONDENSER;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,087, dated August 9 1887 Application filed December 21, 1886. Serial No. 292,208. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL HEss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henderson, in the county of Rusk and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton Cleaners and Condensers; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to cotton-gin attachments, and the object is to provide a machine that will take the cotton as it comes from the gin and clean and condense it at one operation; and to this end the novelty consists, first, in an inclosing-shell having a foraminous drum revolving about an open-ended shell which has a longitudinal opening in its periphery,so as to remove the sand and dirt,and, second, in a foraminous drum revolving within a semicircular wire cage, whereby the cotton will be carried around in rolls on the drum and-inside of the cage, so as to remove the leaf and trash, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described,and particularly pointed out in the claims. These objectslattain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of my improved cotton cleaner and condenser, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A A represent the frame-work of the machine, in the end pieces of which is mounted a longitudinal rigid shaft, B.
C is the flue into which the cotton is carried from the gin. Upon the shaft B is rigidly secured a pair of hubs, I), each providedwit-h radial arms b,which support the interior sheetmetal shell, D, the upper portion ,of which is open from the point d to d.
E E are hubs journaled so as to revolve on the stationary shaft B on the outside of the hubs b, and they are provided with arms 6, to
secured the annular rings F F; and longitudiwooden strips or bars, 0', around which is formed a fine wire-guaze cylinder, G, and on the'outside of this cylinder, parallel with and to each of the bars 6', is secured a strip, 9, which projectsa short distance beyond the periphery of the cylinder. This cylinder revolves within a semicircular cage, H H, which is of a diameter slightly longer than that of the cylinder, the portion H of said cage being composed of sheet metal, while the remaining p0rtion,H, is madeof coarse wire gauze or netting.
The machine is placed, with reference to a gin, so that the fiber or lint as itis discharged from the gin will be carried into the flue C in the direction shown by the arrows. Here the fiber falls upon the periphery of the revolvi'ng wiregauze drum, so that the loose sand and dirt will fall into the sheet-metal shell D through the openings d d, and will be discharged at the ends thereof. The fiber as it falls upon the revolving-drum G is carried past the guard a, and by contact with the portion H of the outside cage is converted or condensed into small longitudinal rolls, and while these rolls are revolving and passing from the point i to the discharge-opening I the leaf and trash are discharged through the meshes of the gauze cage H, the process of revolving the rolls between the inner revolving-drum and the outerstationary cage gradually eliminating the leaf and trash until the rolls arrive at the discharge-opening I, where they fall out comparatively free from foreign matter.
The drum or cylinder G may be revolved by bands on the outside of the annular rings F F; or the periphery of these rings may be provided with teeth which mesh with a pair of pinions mounted on ashaftsuitably located in a parallel and convenient plane.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the outer or inclosing shell having its upper half composed of sheet metal and its lower half of foraminous material and provided with a flue for the admission of the cotton, of the foraminous cylinder and an inclosed open-ended shell having a longitudinal slot immediately below the In testimony whereof I affix my signature entrance-flue, substantially as and for the purin presence of two witnesses. poses specified.
2. The combination, with the foraminous DANIEL HESS. 5 drum, of the inelosing-cage having its upper half constructed of sheet metal and its lower Vitncsses: half 01' foraminous material, substantially as J. MCNAMEE,
and for the purposes specified. FRANK O. W ATKINS.
