:Tron CLEANER AND Aser'Ann'roe;
rename.
Be it..l\'no\\'n that l. Sm'rit l". Kairi', aeitizen ol" the United States. and a resident of ;\lemphis, in the county otl Shelby and Stute of"l`ennessee. have invented a new and Improt'ed Cotton (.leaner and Separator, of which the following;l is a full, clear,- and exvact description.
'l`he in\entionrelates tobi-altes and grins, and its' object is to provide a new and improved cotton cleaner and separator, more especially.designed for completely openingv bolls of cotton, for detarbing' and separately dischargingthe cotton tibers trom the hulls. and dirt, and for repassingthe, unopened bollsthrough the machine.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a suction chamber \\'ithin. \\'hi h is arranged a means for brealiingrthe bolls of cottoln'lneans for separating the hullsand the fibers and `separately discharging',the hulls and. ibers, and means for re-passing the unopenedbolls to the said: breaking means. Y
A practical enibodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying' drawings forming a part of this specitication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a reduced plan View of the cotton cleaner and separator; Fig. 2 isfa sectional side elevation of the 'same on the line 2-2 of Figrsal and 3; Fig. 3 is a transversesection of the same onthe line 3-3 of Figs. 2 and 4; Fig. 4 is a rear side elevation of thesame, with the driving shaft insection-on the line 4 4 oFigB Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of a portion of the separating saw drum, the section-being on the line 5.-5 of Fig. (3; Fig. is a cross section of the same on the line t3`t3 of Fig. 5; and Figa@ .is a cross section'of part ofthe grate and the means for actuatingthe same, the section being on the line 747 of Figi. 2.
The cotton cleaner. and separator mounted in a easing A provided at one side near the top with an.' inlet B and provided at the bottom at the oppositeend'with ax the inlet B into the casing A, and im1nedi-- suitable bearings arranged nthegeasing A,

and on the shafts l)'" and D* are `secured beater arms. 1), 1)"l spaced apart by spacingr collars D, as indicated in Fig. 25. 'the arms 1) are'arranged relative to the arms 'Dn in such a manner that; the arms sweep past one ortheotlierand the outer ends ot' the arms are preferably curved, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. Y l
The outer ends" of the shafts D2 and l)3 n re-pro\'itled'\\'ith pulleys E and E around which passes a belt F, and on the shaft Du Ais secured a pulley G connected by a belt -wu h other nia-chu'iery for impartinga rotary inet-ion to the beater D' anda travelingmotion to the belt l? to rotate the beater D in 'unison' with the beater ,DJly reference to the arrows in Fig. 2, itwillgbe noticed that the beaters l) and 1) are rotated simnl# in opposite directions. The beater arms Dhand D are spaced apart a distance than the diameter-olil a half open boll of cotton so that; the bells passim.l
between the beaters l) and D are, crushed andiopened by the heater arms D", Di' and the hulls of the bolts are partly separatedandloosened from the cotton tibers.
