COMBINED STOOL AND SEWING-MACHINE COVER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,008, dated August 9, 1887.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY CLARENCE Ron- ERTSON, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Combined Stool and Sewing-Machine Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a combined stool and sewing-machine cover of simple construction, and in which the stool may be quickly adjusted in the raised position and be afforded'a firm support, while in the lowered position it will be mainly received within the sewing machine cover and will occupy but little space therein.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a broken side elevation showing the stool in the raised position, and indicating by dotted lines its position when lowered,

and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line 00 m in Fig. 1..

The box A, having the general form of an ordinary sewingmachine cover, has its top a cut away at the ends, as at aa, forming slots in communication with the interior of the box, and on the upper surface of the top a are formed notches or grooves a, preferably two near each end.

The uprights b of the stool B pass downward within the box A, through the slots a a, and are braced at the bottom by connecting-strips I), which also prevent the stool from being wholly withdrawn from the box or cover A.

The top of the stool is preferably provided with a cushion, O, and at the sides and ends of the top are securedstrips D, preferably faced with a molding, d. The stripsD form a recess beneath the cover of the stool, and within the recess two supporting legs or leaves,

E, are hinged, their lower ends being beveled, as shown, to adapt them to be engaged by the notches a in the top of cover A when the stool is raised. When the stool is lowered, the legs E fold upward against the under side of the top of the stool within the recess formed by the strips D, and the top of the stool rests on the top of the box or cover A.

By providing two or more notches a the stoolmay be adjusted higher or lower, as desired.

With the above-described construction the stool may be quickly adjusted in the raised position and will be afforded a firm support, and in the lowered position of the stool it will occupy but little space, and the combined article presents the appearance of an ordinary sewing-machine cover.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The box or cover A, having notches a in the upper surface of its top,and slots at, in combination with the stool B, the end uprights, b, of which pass into the box A through the slots a, the strips b, connecting the uprights 1) within the box A, and the legs E, hinged to the stool B and adapted to be engaged by the notches a substantially as shown and de scribed.
