My invention consists in a construction whereby theink-distributi n g brush is arranged on the end of the reservoir-handle in a position oblique or at an angle to the direction of its length, which construction affords great convenience in the manipulation of the device.

Myinvention also consists in a construction whereby the guard for preventing the coloring-liquid from reaching the upper of the boot or shoe is yieldingly connected with the device for the purpose of rendering the operation of the same at certain points more effective.

My invention also consists in improved means forattaching the brush to the device.

My invention also vconsists in improved means for regulating the fiow of the ink or v cololingliquid to the brush.

Reference is to .be had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which drawings the same letters of reference indicate the same parts wherever they occur.

Y In carrying out my improvements I provide a tube, a, of brass or other suitable material, and cut a screw-thread in the bore at one end, turning therein a hollow exteriorl y screwthreaded plug, b, which affords means for attaching a flexible tube, c, with the device, which flexible tube may be connected with a fountain of any suitable character affording a supply of ink or coloring-liquid for use in the device. The opposite end of the handle is cut away on a plane at an angle or obliquely to the direction'of its length and a dovetail groove formed therein, and a dovetail projection, d, constructed on the back of the distribating-brush c, of a form adapted to [it closely in said dovetail groove, which affords a convenient and effective means of attaching the brush to the reservoir-handle a, andat the same time gives the brush such position as to present its full face to thesolc when the device is held in the most natural and convenient position in the hand of the operator.

In the handle above the dovetail groove formed therein, and substantiallyin line therewith, I tap a screw-threaded hole,f, and 1nsert therein a screw, g, which, by preference,

does not extend entirely through the handle a. I then drill holes h through the back or dovetail portion of the brush and the screw g to the interior or reservoir i of the handle, and by this means provide for the flow of ink from the reservoir t to the brush e, and by slightly turning the screw, which may be done by the aid of an ordinary screw-driver, I may shut off the flow of ink entirely, or admit a more or less bountiful supply to the brush, as circumstances or the nature of theA work may require, regulating this matter with the greatest nieety.

The sides of the reservoir-handle at its forward end are flattened by cutting awayapor tween the upper and sole of the boot or shoe being operated upon, and prevent the brush from applying the ink or coloring-liquid to the upper.

The guard l is provided toward its forward end with a short slot, mi, extending through which and into the handle a is a screw, a, whereby the movement of the guard Z on its pivot k is limited. A spring, o, coiled `about a stud,j, and having one end secured under a pin, q, is arranged to have its free end rest on the guard l, and thus hold the guard down with a yielding pressure, so that in using the device in inking or coloring short curves 0r angles in the edgeof thesole,and to meet other exigeneies, the guard will yield slightly and 4permit the distributing-brush to be further depressed than could be done were this provision not made.

The operation and manner of using my deviee will now be understood without further description.

While I. have described what I regard as the best manner of constructing the various parts, it is obvious that their form and arrangement may be varied without departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, whatl claim is- 1. A rcservoirhandle consisting of ahollow tube having one end out away on a plane oblique or at an angle to the direction of its length, and an inl; or color distributing brush secured to said angular end, combined and op erating substantially as and for the purposes hcreinbefore set forth.

2. A reservoir-handle, an inl@distributing` brush secured on one end thereof, and a guard for preventing the coloring-liquid from reaching the upper of the boot or shoe, said guard being yicldingly connected with the reservoirhandle, all arranged, com bined,and operating substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

3. A reservoir-handle consisting of a hollow tube having one end cut away on a plane oblique or at an angle to the direction of its length, a dovetail groove formed in said angular portion, and a distributing-brush having a dovetail projection on its back adapted to iit snugly in said groove, whereby thebrush may be attached to the handle, all combined and arranged substantially as and for thepurposes hereinbcfore set forth.

4. A reservoir-handle consisting of a hollow tube having one end cut away on a plane oblique -or at an angle to the direction of its length, a distributiugbrush secured to said angular portion, aserewthreaded hole formed in thehandle above the brush, and holes formed in the back of the brush and through the screw, whereby the ink or colori iig-liquid in the reservoir-handle may be supplied to the brush, and the flow of said ink or liquid reg ulated, all combined, constructed, and arranged substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

5. In a device for inking the edges of boot or shoe soles, an ink distributing brush, a guard, l, adapted to enter the crease between the sole and upper of the boot or shoe, and located alongside of the brush to prevent the ink from being distributed on the upper, and a support for said guide, the latter having a yielding connection edgewise with its support, all constructed, combincd,and operating substantially as and for the purposes hereinbel'ore set forth.
