UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE IRVINE JAMES ADAIE, oE DALLAS, TEXAS, AssIeNoE oE oNE-n'ALETo EDWARD J. eANNoN, 0E SAME rLAoE.
COPY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,574l dated August 2, 1887.
c Application iileil April 28, 1887.
To all whom it Iota/y concern,.-
Be it known that I, InvrNE JAMES ADAIE, of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of rleXas, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Copylloldersof which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved copy-holder intended especially for holding deeds when being transcribed to the records, and seeks to provide a simple inexpensive construction by which. the deed may be held and to and from which the deed or other paper may be adjusted without difficulty, such construction serving also to mark or indicate the particular line of the paper being copied.
The invention consists in certain features of construction and novel combinations of paris, as will be described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective, and Fig. 2 a sectional view of my invention.
rlhe base A may be slotted at a from one edge to receive an extension-board, B, when it is desired to copy from one piece of paper to another, or it may have the extensioirboard B formed integral with it when intended to be used in such manner. It is preferred, however, to form it with such slot, as in practice, when copying` into record or other books, portions ofthe covers of such books may be fitted into said slot, and so serve to steady the device in position. Near its edge oppositeslot a the base has uprights C C mounted on it, and preferably inclined rearwardly from their lower to their upper ends.
To the uprights near their upper ends I journal the feed-rollers D D, one of which has a thumb -head or other suitable handle by which it may be turned, and the peripheries of said rollers touch and are covered with rubber or similar material, so the turning thereof will operate to feed paper placed between them. These rollers are preferred5but manifestly they might be substituted by other well-known feeding devices, or they might be omitted and the paper fed forward by hand as the copying proceeded.
Between the uprights and below the feedrollers I arrange the guide-bars E F, thelower Serial No. 236,505. (No model.)
edge of the former extending slightly below the upper edge of the latter, as`shown.
The spring bail-clamp G has its arms g secured to the nprights and its cross-bar g arranged to have a tension downward toward and against the base or against papers placed between it and said base. The arrangement of the paper when being copied is shown clearly in Fig. 2, it being passed from the rear between the guide-bars E F, thence up in front of bar E, and through between rollers D D.
lt will be noticed that the device holds the paper to be copied in the best possible posi tion, almost the same as one would hold a book in reading. rllhe device also enables one to copy from the rst to the last line with the instrument being copied the same distance from the eye. rlhe spring serves to hold the leaf in place when, used in copying into a record-book 5 and when the device is used to copy fromone piece of paper to another the spring serves to hold the paper on which the user is writing.
Having thus described my inventioinwhat I l. A copyholder having its base formed with a slot openingout of one edge and formed in approximately. the plane of said base, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a copyholder,of the base, the uprights, the guide-bars E F, and the clamp G, for securing the paper on which the user is writing, sul'istantiall y as set forth.
3. The combination, in a copyholdeiyof the base, the uprights, the guide-barE, a feeder, and a clamp, G, for securing the paper on which the user is writing, all substantially as set forth.
4. The improved copyholdcr herein described, consisting of the base A, having slot a., the uprights C C, the guide-bars E F, the feed-rollers D D, and the clamp G, all being substantially as and for thc purposes specified.
