SUSPENDING DEVICE FOR LAMPS AND SHADES.

SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,299, dated July 26, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WOLCOTT A. HULL, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement relates particularly to lamps of the kind which are known as hanging lamps.

I will describe in detail a lamp embodying my improvement, and then point out the novel features in claims.

In the'accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig.3 is a vertical section of the upper part of the shade and a shade crown or ring.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A designates a lamp-reservoir, B a lampburner secured to the same, and G a chimney mounted upon the burner.

The reservoir A is fitted in a cup-shaped holder, D. It may be removed therefrom at pleasure.

The holder D may be made of sheet metal or other suitable material. It has extending therefrom arms D. As shown, there are but two of these arms, and they extend from diametricallyopposite parts of the holder. They may bemade of metal and have any ornamental configuration. They may be secured to the holder D in any desirable manner as, forinstance, by riveting them to the same, or by securing them thereto by means of screws. The arms D, at or near their outer extremities, have transversely-extending bar-like portions D E designates chains or similar contrivances, forming. suspenders for the holder D. I have shown four of these. They are connected at the lower ends with'the bar-like portions D of the arms D, and near the extremities of said bar-like portions. These suspenders E are therefore arranged inpairs, each pair of which is connected with one of the bar-like portions D The suspenders of each pair converge upwardly to a common point, and are connected directly to a hanger or indirectly thereto by means of coupling-pieces P. s As shown, they are connected to a hanger, G, and the suspenders forming each pair are connected to the hanger G at a point diametrically opposite the point at which those forming the other pair are connected to said hanger.

The hanger G is shown as made in the shape of a ring of ornamental configuration, but may be of any kind.

H designates a shade, which may be of the ordinary style and made of any desirable material. Its upper part fits in a ring, I, preferably made of metal and in the shape of an ornamental crown. This crown is secured to the shade so that it may support the shade. It may be secured in any desirable manner to attain this result. For instance, the shade may have at the upper end a cylindric portion, h,

provided with an outwardly-extending bead or rim, h, and the crown may be provided with screws i, whereby the crown may be fastened to the shade by extending under the bead on lip of the shade.

J designates suspenders consisting of chains or like contrivances. As shown, they are arranged in pairs, which are connected at the lower ends to the crown I. The suspenders J forming each pair converge upwardly, and are connected to the hanger G at the same points or approximately the same points as the suspenders E, or connected to the coupling-pieces P. The shade H is therefore suspended from the hanger G independently of the holder D, which sustains the lan1p-reservoir and its appurtenances.

The suspenders J, when made of chains, may be connected at differentpoints in theirlengths to the'crown I or the hanger, so as to provide for elevating or lowering the shade, if desired.

By my improvement I provide for suspending the shade of a lamp independently of other parts of the lamp, and thereby I avoid all the shadows which are cast by theordinaryshadesupports and materially cheapen the lamp.

The hanger G, in the present example of my improvement, is shown as connected to cords or chains K, tbatextend to a suspending device, L, This suspending device may be attached t9 a ceiling, hook, or other-support, and it comprises a drum, around which the cords or chains are wound, and a spring combined IOO with the drum for counterbalanciug the weight of the lamp. This suspending device maybe of anyapproved construction.

\Vhat I claim as my irwention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a suspension device, of cords or chains wound thereon and extending therefrom, a hanger suspended from said cords or chains, a lamp-reservoir holder connected to said hanger by suspenders independent of the suspenders first named,a shade, and suspenders, independent of either of the other suspenders supporting the shade and connected to the hanger, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of a hanger, G, alampreservoir holder, D, suspenders E, connected to the lamp-reservoir holder and the hanger, a shade, a crown or ring seeu red to the upper part ofsaid shade, and suspenders J, fastened to the crown or ring and connected to the hanger G, substantially as specified.
