UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES K. GILES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATCH-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,288, dated July 26, 1887.
Application filed July 18, 1855. Serial No. 172,016. (llIodclJ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OuAnLns K. GILns, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi-\ nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inWVatch-Oases, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which l Figure 1 is a plan view of a watch-case embodying my invention, a portion of the same being broken away to show the construction; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same taken on the line w x of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view of the case-lining and outswinging ring detached; Fig. 4, a view of the case-lining detached without the outswinging ring; and Fig. 5, a
transverse sectional view of the case-lining.
Like letters refer tolike parts in all the ures of the drawings.
My invention relates to watch-cases, its ob ject being to provide a case-lining which shall prevent access of dust to the movement, while at the same time the movement will be readily accessible for inspection or repair and to these ends my invention consists in certain .novel features, which I will now proceed to describe, and then specifically point out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the case proper, which is shown as constructed in the same manner as the watch-case shown and described in an application filed by me April 27, 1885, Serial No. 163,658. It will be understood, of course, that I do .not limit myself to any particular form of case in the application of my improvement. WVithin the case proper, A, is fitted a case-lining, B, which is. open only at its upper face, being preferably constructed of a shell of metal in a single piece. This case-lining fits snugly within .the case proper and is retained in position by any suitable means. 7 In the construction shown, the watch-case being adapted to receive a stenrwinding movement, the lining is retained in position by means of the windingstem, which passes through it, the lining being provided with an aperture,b, to receive the stem. This case-lining B is provided with an outswinging ring, 0, which is constructed to receive the watchmovement; The hinge connection between the movement-holding ring 0 and case-lining B consists of a separate hinge-piece, D, fitting in a recess, d, in the outer surface of the case-center B and flush with the said surface. This hinge-piece has hinged to it the movement-holding ring G,and
by means of the case proper, A, when the case- 'lining is in place. This piece D is also in this instance perforated at d to permit the winding-stem to pass through it.
It will be seen that with the above construction the caselining, being open only at its upper face, will effectually prevent any access of the dust to' the movement from below, since it incloses the movement com- 'is retained in position in the recess or seat (1 pletely as far as its exposed portions are 0011- cerned. At the same time access can be readily had to the movement by turning out the outswingingmovement-holding ring which carries the same.
It is obvious that various modifications in the details of construction may be made without departing from the principle of my invention. :For instance, the case-lining and outswinging ring may be applied to any suitable form of case, whether hunter or open face.
I do not wish to be understood as here claiming anything described and shown in the application of It. E. Fenner, Serial No. 168,286, and I hereby disclaim as of my invention everything that is shown and described in the said Fen nerapplication.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The outer case, in combination with a case-lining provided with a recess or seat of irregular shape located between the two said parts and having an aperture to receive the winding-stem, an independent leaf ofshape corresponding to said seat and adapted to fit within the latter and perforated for the winding-stem,and a movement-holdingring hinged to said leaf, whereby the said leaf may be locked in position between the case and the lining, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
the case-lining B, provided with a recess or 1novelnentholding ring C, hinged to the leaf seat, (Z, in its outer surface, the back portion of D, substantially as and I'm the purposes speciwhich is Wider than the front, and having an fled.
aperture, I), for the Windingstem, and the in- CHARLES K. GILES. 5 dependent leaf D, shaped like the recess (2, Witnesses:
which it is adapted to closely fit, and per- JOSEPH L. IIAR'DTIG,
forated at d for the winding-stem, and the J. HARRIS.
