lNKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,1367, dated July 26, 1887.
"0 aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DAELING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, havelinvented a new and useful Improvement'iii Ink-v stands, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates especially to that class of inkstands which are provided with an elastic ink-fountain; and it consists in an inkstand having an elastic inlefountain, a. dip-cup, a ease or frame made in two parts, which are connected to each other by means of a revolublejoint, one ofthe said parts being provided with an interior screw-thread, a follower-plate provided at its periphery with a screw-thread iittingV the screw-threaded part ofthe ease, and means for inipartinga relative movement of rotation to the screw-threaded part of the case and the follower-plate, whereby the vertical-height of the chamber for holding the elastic ink-fountain will be increased or diminished, thus controlling the ink-supply in the dip-cup.
Figure l is a vertical section of aninkstand embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the follower-plate. Fig- 3 represents a top view of the lower and eXterior part of the case. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section showing the construction of the revoluble joint between the upper and lower Fig. 5 represents an under view of the upper and interior part of the ease.
In the accompanying drawings,Ais the npper and interior part ot` the case, and B the lower and exterior part of the same, the c y` lindrical portion a of the part B being provided with an interior annular groove, b, and
` the cylindrical portion c of the part A being provided with the opposite exterior lugs,.d d, which, upon forcing the part A within the cylindrical cavity of the part B, will spring into thesaid annulargroove, and when so held the parts A and B of the case will be connected to each other by means of a revoluble, joint. The part A at its lower interior portion is provided with a screw-thread, e, and the followerplate O is provided atits peripheryjwith a screw-thread adapted to it thescrew-thread e, and also with the perforations ff, 'adapted to receive the upwardly-projecting pins or studs g y, which aresecu red to the bottom plate, h,
of the part B of the `ease, so that if the part A is held stationary and the part B is revolved then the same revolution will beimparted to the k follower plate, which will rise or fall upon the pins or studsg g according to the direction ot' the revolving movement. Gis also provided with a socket, i, adapted to receive the pivotj of the concaved bearingplate D, which bears directly against the conveX bottom portion, k, of the ink-fountainE; but when the bearing-surface-m of the plate D is made smooth, the said plate can be made either integral with or rigidly secured to the part B of the case.
The neck a ofthe elastic ink fountain E passes upward through the central opening, o, in the top plate, p, of the part A of the case, and is secured therein by means of the forcible `insertion of the stem q of the dip-cup F, which serves to press the elastic neck of the fountain tirml y against the wall of the opening o. The upwardly-projecting flange o', which surrounds the opening o, i's provided with an external screw-thread, s, which is adapted to receive the interior screw-thread of the cap G, and at the upper in'teriorportion of the cap G is placed the rubber packing-disk t, which serves to form a tight joint between the cap G and the upper surface of the dip-cup.
The cavity u in the dip-cup to receive the The follower-plate ink is'made slightly tapering, and atits lower of the ink-fountain, forces the ink upward into the cavityu of the dip-cnp,and the reverse movement of the follower will cause the withv drawal of the ink from the said cavity. Upon screwing down the cap G, the cavity u of the dipcnp will be tightly closed, so that the inkstand can be either carried in the pocket or handled without danger of leaking.
I claim as myinvention 1. An inkstand having an elastic ink-fount ain, 'a dip-cup, a case orframe made in two revoluble parts, which are connected to each ot her,one ofthe said parts being provided with IOO an interior screw-thread, a followerplate provided atiis periphery with a screw-th read fitting the screw-threaded part of the ease, and means for imparting a relative movement of rotation to the screw-threaded part of the ease and the follower-plate, whereby the vertical height of the chamber for holding the inkfountain will be varied, thus controlling the ink-supply in the dip-cup7 substantiallyas dcscribed.
2. An inlisland having an elastic ink fountain, a dip-cup, a ease or frame made in two revol uble parts, which are connected to each other by means ofan annular groove and projecting lugs, the inner cylindrical portion of the ease heilig provided with an interior screwthread,a follower-plate provided at its periphery with a screwthread fitting the screwthread of the inner portion of the ease, a stud projecting upward from the bottom part ofthe case and engaging with the follower-plate, whereby upon imparting a relative movement of rotation to the screw-threaded part of the case and the follower-plate the vertical height ofthe chamber which holds the ink-fountain 25 will be varied, thus controlling the ink-supply in the dip-cup, substantially as described.
3. An inkstand having an elasticinlefountain, a dip-cup, a case or frame made in two revoluble parts, which are connected to each other by means of an annular groove and projecting lugs7 the inner cylindrical portion of the case being provided with an interior screwthread, a follower -plate provided at its periphery with a screw-thread fitting the Screwthread of the inner portion of the case7 and means for imparting a relative movement of rotation to the screw-threaded part ofthe case and the follower-plate, whereby the vertical height of the chamber for holding the inkfountain will be raised, thus controlling the ink-supply in thedipeup, substantially as described.
