IUNITED STATES PATENT OEEICEO GEORGE S. ANDRES, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
oiLmru-.SSv MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,127, dated July 26, 1887.
' Application filed May 11, 1887. Serial No. 237,902. (No model 'lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I
Myinvention relates to an improved mat for oil presses; and it consists of a coarse duck or fibrouswoven material having strips of sheet `metal riveted parallel with and at short intervals from each other upon both sides, as will be more fully described. Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a view of a section of the mat. Fig. 3 shows the mat and plate.
In the pressure of oil-cake, the meal is first placed in the 'bag or wrapper of cloth, and this is placed between mats, which may be either made of metal or porous ieXible or fibrous material. These mats are in many cases made of hair; but the objection is that the great pressure causes them to stretch in the direction of their Width, and this tears the bags, so thatthey are rendered useless after a few operations.
In my invention the base of the mat consists of heavy cotton duck or similar fibrous material A, which is closely woven, but is sufficiently porous to allow the escape of the oil through its interstices. Upon each side of this mat I rivet strips of sheet metal B, so that they lie parallel with each other and ata short distance apart from one side of the'mat to the other.. The lines of rivets which pass through the pairsof metal strips upon opposite sides are preferably from two inches apart upward; but I do not wish to limit myself to any special distance between the rivets.
By this construction the mat is prevented from stretching in the direction of the length of the strips, which is the direction in which stretching would produce bad results upon the bag, and by reason of the spaces-between the strips the mat is sufficiently iiexible, so that it may be folded in the usual manner when the bag and contained meal are placed` between the folded partspreparatory to pressing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The oil-press niat4 composed o f cotton duck or woven fibrous material, in combination with metallic strips riveted together from opposite sides, extending from end to end and parallel with each other, substantially as described. i
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
I eEo. s. ANDRES.
