FINGER-RING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,668, dated July 19,1887.

.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK KAFFEMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Initial and other Rings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a fastener for rings whereby the separate or auxiliary piece upon which the design or ornamentation is cut, impressed, or otherwise formed is held to the ring proper in such a manner as to permit its removal in order to replace or substitute another of a different or similar design or formation.

My invention consists of the setting or initial plate made of any suitable material, provided with a dovetail or bevel groove on its under sideadapted to receive a correspondingshaped wedge slightly bent, so that when it passes through the slots of the vertical walls of the ring proper and into the said bevelgroove of the initial stone or setting it will bind the two together firmly.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the ring complete. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view taken on line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view taken on line 7 y of said Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the wedge, showing its shape before inserted into the groove of the stone.

Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings, in which a represents the initial stone, provided with the bevel. or dovetail groove b on its under side, the whole of which is placed within the seat of the ring formed by the walls (I, provided with slots 0, into which the bevel-edged and s1ight1y-bent wedge f is inserted when driving it into the groove b of the initial stone a. In order to re move the stone when one of a different design is required, I force out the wedge f, when the stone a can be easily removed and replaced by another.

I am aware that finger-rings havchcretoforc been made having a detachable initial stone provided with pins adapted to pass into the ring, and a key to which could also pass into the ring and engage said pins. Now, my invention differs from this, as I dispense with the pins and use a beveled wedge slightly bent, whereby I obtain the same result with a more simplified construction produced at less cost.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to sccu re by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a fingerring, of the detachable initial or ornamental stone a, having the bevel or dovetailed groove I) on the under side thereof, and arranged within the walls (I, having the slots 0, adapted to receive the slightly-bent wedge f, designed to engage with the said groove I), substantially as shown and described.
