Description

(No Model.)
' 0. B. SHALLENBERGER.
SAFETY STRIP FOR ELECTRIC GIROUITS.
No. 366,350. Patented July 12, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.-
OLIVER B. SHALLENBERGER, OF ROCHESTER, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE WESTINGHOUSE, JR, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY-STRIP FOR ELECTRIC CIRCUITS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,350, dated July 12, 1887,
Application filed January 1'7, 1887. Serial No. 224,521.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, OLIVER B. SHALLEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Rochester, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SafetyStrips for Electric Circuits, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the construction of safety-strips or fusible plugs for electric circnits.
The object of the invention is to provide convenient means for replacing safety-strips in electric circuits, in case they are burned out, Without having to interrupt the connections with the bindingpost, to insure that no injury shall be sustained by the person changing the strip.
The invention consists, generally, in placing the respective ends of the safety-strip, which carry contact-springs, in suitable resilient clips, with which the normal circuit-connections are completed, and in employing suitable tongs or clamps for holding a strip, designed to beinserted in place of the one which may be destroyed, without having to loosen the binding-screws which are usually employed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a device embodying the features of the invention, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Referring to the figures, A represents a suitable base for supporting the strips and placing (No model.)
them in circuit. This base carries two binding-plates, B and B". These plates are respectively constructed with spring-clips O and 0", each consisting of two springs, c c", which are designed to receive contact'springs e and e of two clips, E and E secured to the respective ends of a fusible strip, E. The springs e e are preferably of brass, and are placed in good electrical connection with the fusible strip by rivets or screws f f". The springs preferably bend outward and enter corresponding curved portions of the clips.
A pair of tongs or nippers, H, preferably provided with a handle of insulating material, is employed for holding the strips and thrusting them into position between the clips when desired.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination, with a fusible strip, of resilient contact-springs secured to the respective ends thereof.
2. The combination, with two binding-clips of resilient material, of afusible strip and con tact-springs at the respective extremities of the same, designed to make contact with the respective clips.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 7th day of December, A. D. 1886.
OLIVER B. SHALLENBERGER.
