J. H. ALLEN FUSE BLOCK 2 s 4 if w 1 Inventor Patented Dot. 6, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,555,930 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. ALLEN, or LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO THE MCCLABY MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, or L NDON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
rose BLOCK.
Application filed September 17, 1923. Serial NO. 663,264.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ALLEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and
, resident of the city of London, county of Middlesex, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Fuse Block, as described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, that form part of the same.
The principal objects of the invention are, to produce a fuse block which will enable the insertion or removal of the fuses without danger of the person doing so being shocked or creating a short circuit, and to devise a block which will thoroughly protect the electrical contacts and terminals.
The principal feature of the invention consists in the novel construction of a block whereby the fuses are arranged in an en closure entirely separate from the live con tacts and are adapted to be electrically connected with the live terminals by contact members carried by the cover.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete fuse block showing the cover removed and the sections separated.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the base block 1 composed of di-electric material is formed with the parallel transverse channels 2, 3 and 4 at one end through which the feed wires pass.
Adjacent to the channel 4 are arranged a pair of individual recesses 5 and within these recesses are arranged the spring contacts 6.
Channels 7 are arranged in the inside of the blocks by means of which the spring contacts 6 are connected to the terminal clamps 8 arranged in the channels 2 3 and 4.
A cover 9 of di-electric material 1s adapted to be secured to the top of the base closing the channels 2, 3 and 4 and notches 10 are arranged in one edge thereof to receive the upper ends of the spring contacts.
The base block 1 is formed with a shoulder 11 extending thereacross flush with the outer side of the recesses 5, the top of this shoulder being arranged considerably above the top of the spring contacts 6 and preferably level with the top of the cover 9. The notched edge of the cover abuts this shoulder.
The block beyond the shoulder 11 is formed with a pair of longitudinal recesses 12 separated by a dividing wall 13 and in the ends adjacent to the cross wall forming the shoulder 11 are secured the spring contacts 14 arranged in alignment with and corresponding to the contacts 6. Connected with these contacts are the fuse holding clips 15.
Outer clips 16 are secured toward the outer end of the recesses ,where terminal screws 17 are arranged to receive the service wires which enter through the Vertical slots 18.
A cover 19 is adapted to fit over the top of the recesses 12 and has a shoulder 20 adapted to abut the ribbed top of the shoulder 11. The cover 19 extends over the top of the notches 10 completely closing same and the cover 9 is provided with transverse rib 21 to abut the end of the overlapping cover.
Rigidly secured in suitable recesses 22 within the underside of the cover 19 are a pair of finger contacts 23 forming bridges to engage the aligned contacts 6 and 14.
l/Vhen the cover 9 is in place the contacts 6 cannot be touched accidentally and the contacts 14 are dead but when the cover 19 is placed the bridge contacts 23 connect the fuse clips with the live contacts.
f A fuse block such as described is extremely compact, very simple to manufacture and is very safe to use.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A fuse block having recesses spaced apart by a dividing wall, live electric contacts arranged one slde of the wall, line wires connected with said contacts, a cover closing in the line wire connections to said contacts, fuse contacts arranged the other side of said wall, and a cover having bridged contacts to engage the aforesaid contacts and to straddle the wall and engage and cover said fuse contacts.
2. A fuse block having a pair of recesses, 21 live electrical terminal arranged in each of said recesses, recesses arranged adjacent to the aforesaid recesses and separated therefrom by a division Wall, electric terminals arranged in the latter recesses. fuse holdin members connected with the latter terminals terminal fuse clips also arranged in d latter recesses, a cover extending over the first nan'zed recesses and closing in the live terminals having openings therethrough, and a cover adapted to overla the openings in the aforesaid cover and aving bridge contacts adapted to extend over the wall and to engage the paired spring contacts 3. A fuse block, comprising, a block of di-electric material having transverse grooves to receive the electric conductors, a pair of recesses adjacent to said grooves, spring contacts arranged in said recesses, means connectin said spring contacts with the wires in sai grooves, a transverse wall rising above the top of said recesses, apair of recesses on the opposite side. of said wall, contacts arranged 1n the latter recesses in alignment with the aforesaid contacts, fuse contacts arranged in the latter recesses, a
cover extending over said transverse grooves and having notches registering with the recesses, said cover abutting the transverse shoulder, and a cover closing the latter recsses and extending over the shoulder and over the openings in the aforesaid cover, and metal bridge pieces secured to the underside of the latter cover adapted to connect the paired contacts.
