CHARLIE H. LON G, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
EMERGENCY FUSIBLE CUT-OUT FOR ELECTRIC CIRCUITS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,286, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed July 10, 1897. Serial No. 644,099- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLIE H. LONG, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emergency Conduotors or Electric Switches; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in electric switches specially designed for electric-light circuits.
It has for its object to serve as a temporary supply in an emergency until the defect has been permanently remedied, as in the event of the blowing out or fusing of a fuse or fusible wire, arising, as is liable, from certain contingencies with which electricians are familiar.
The invention is adapted for all straightaway and branch blocks.
It consists of the'detailed construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan viewof my improved electric switch, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the switch in side view and the closure therefor in section.
1 is a base, of non-conducting material, of a switch for an electric-light circuit.
4 4 are the ordinary fusible wires suitably connected to binding-posts and screws, in turn connected to opposed wire plates 2 3, to which are attached the line wires 10 10 through additional binding-posts and screws in the usual way, as shown. Opposite binding-posts, with which one end of each of said fusible wires is connected, are provided with lateral sockets or contacts 8 8.
5 is a strip of conducting material suitably secured to the base 1 and connected at one end to a lateral arm or extension 2 of one of the primary wire plates 2 by a fusible wire or link 6, as shown, the opposite end of said strip having pivoted or jointed to it a'laterally-movable lever or switch proper, '7, having a suitably-insulated knot or handle 9 for its convenient manipulation or movement into and out of engagement with one of the contacts or sockets 8.
It is apparent that in event of the blowing or fusing of a wire 4 the switch can readily be brought into requisition by moving the lever 7 by means of the handle 9 into engagement with the opposite socket 8, where it re mains until the defective wire 4 is remedied, after which it is withdrawn ready for use in event of another such occurrence. It will also be seen that this switch, having a fusible link or wire, provides against the fusing or blowing of the circuit-wire elsewhere while the defect arising from the fusing of the wire 4 is being remedied.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an electric switch, the combination, with the opposed wire plates, spanned by the fusible wires, and opposite ones of said plates having sockets or contacts, of the laterallymovable switch adapted to engage one of said sockets or contacts and having the fusiblewire connection with one of the opposite end plates, substantially as set forth.
2. In an electric switch, the combination, with the opposed wire plates, spanned by the fusible wires, and opposite ones of said plates having sockets or contacts, of the laterallymovable switch comprising a fusible member or link connected to one of said plates by a lateral arm of said plate, an intermediary member attached to the base, and a third member connected to said intermediary member and having an insulated handle or knob,
substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib-
