Description

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
A. B. BAILEY, OF MIDDLE IIAD DAM, CONNECTICUTI.
IMPROVEMENT -IN CAPS FOR COl-'FIN-SCREWS'..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,635, dated October' 111, 19.62.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, A. B. BAILEY, of Middle Haddam, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful 'Improvement in Caps for Coffin- Screws; and I do hereby declare that the fellowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the san1e, reference being hadto the aecompanymg' drawings, making a lpart of this speciiication, in which- Figure lisa plan or'top' view of my invern tion. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectionof the same, takenA in the line x x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the cap'nowin use. Fig, 4 isa vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.,
This invention. relates to an improvementV V1n the 'ornamental caps which cover the screws soas to expose the same', the invention also' vlnsnrlng a snug orproper fit ofthe cap to its base.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct mv invention, I will proceed to describe'it. v
A represents the'base on which the capds secured. This base .may be of lozenge or other desired form, and itis swagedor struck up in proper shape, and.with any ornamental coufiguration, by means ol' suitable dies. In the drawings this baseis shown of diamond or 1ozengeform, and it is constructed with' a recess, a, to receive the head of the screw, (see Fig. 2,) in whichfihe screw-is shown in red.
B represents the cap, which may bev of circular or-.other desired form. This cap is provided at one sidewith a small ear orlug, b, through which and the base A a rivet, c',
passes, which secures the cap to the base and ata point directly by the side ofthe recess a,
lso that the cap may be adjusted over the recess and the head of the screw, asshewnclear- 1y in Figs. 2 and 4. v
The aboye-described `parts are not new, be-
ing precisely the same as the ordinary screw cap in common use. In the ordinary arrangement, however, the cap B is-secured over the recess abyha'vingan ear orlug, d, at thelower edge of the cap at a point directly opposite to the rivet ear or lug-b, and in the under side of this ear or lug d a hole or recess, e, is made to fit over a nipple, f, on the base when the cap is closed. (See Fig. 4.) This recess c and nipple f form the catch or fastening for the .cap to keep it in proper position over the reA cess e. ,It has been found, however, not to answer the purpose, as the ear or lng d will, b y a very slight jar or knock, work 01T from the nipple f, as there is nothing. to hold the former down on the latter.
y improvement (shown'in Figs. i and 2) effectually obviates this difficulty. The ear or lug d is perfectly flat, (see Fig. 2,)and
1n the base A there is made a slit, y, at-the lowerpart o f a projection or prominence, h, Y
on the base adjoining the recess a. In closing the cap B the ear or lug d passes into the slit g within the prominence h. By this arrange:
ment the cap B willbe securely held in posi' tion. Itis designed that the ear orlug d shall have a pressure upward to canse it to bear or press suiciently hard against the upper sur face of the inner side of the prominence to preventait casually slipping out from the prominence, the latter atv the same keeping the cap Asnugly down on the base, so as to forni a tight iit or adjustment of the cap to the base all around the recess a. This result, it will be s een, is not attained by the old mode of fastening the cap.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fiat ear or lug Z ofthe cap B, in combination with the slitted prominence l1 on the -base A, when arranged as shown, to forni a new and improved catch or fastening for van ornamental cap for collie-screws, as herein set forth.
A. n. BAILEY,
`lVitnesses:
NVM. S. PURPLE, L. K. HUBBARD.
