BATHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,110, dated July 5, 1887.

Be it known that I, JACK W. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuba, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bathing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the bathing-machines for which Letters Patent Nos. 350,489 and 350,490 were granted to me October 12, 1886; and the present invention consists in the combination, with a bathingmachine frame constructed as described, of a bathing-chamber in portable waterproof casing supported above the machine-platform to provide an inclosed space for the bather; air purifying, drying, heating, and inedicating devices located beneath or near said platform and communicating with the inelosed space above,- a pair of rotary brushes journaled in a swinging frame supported in the upper part of the machinc-frame to apply friction to the bathers head, and an adjustable rotary towelshaft arranged and operating as hereinafter described, and carrying a detachable towel to deliver a succession of blows on the bathers body, the object of the invention being to pro-" vide for family use an improved form of Turkish bathing at avery low cost.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a bathing-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is afront view of the headrubbing attachment. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the lower part of the machine, showing the devices for purifying, drying, heating, and medioating the air employedin the bath. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the mechanism for supporting and operating the adj ustable rotarytowel'shaft.

The numeral 1 designates aplatform having front supports, 2, and supported at the rear by uprights 3, that are connected with the supports 2 by horizontal braces in any suit able manner. The uprights 3 are preferably connected at the top bya cross-piece or arch, 4, which may be provided with a hook, 5, from which to suspend a showering or douche device, as shown in my above-named Patent No. 350,489.

To the upper part of each upright 3 is attaehed an arm, 0, for supporting and bracing a horizontal frame, 7, which is preferably circular in form and made of metal. Over this circular horizontal frame 7 is thrown a flexible Water-proof easing, 8, made of canvas, oilcloth, or other suitable material. of this removable or detachable water-proof casing which envelops the machine an inclosed space for the bather is provided above the machine-platform. The water-proof casing 8 is provided at suitable points with transparent panels 9, to admit light to the interior, and it also has an opening controlled by aslide, 10, for regulating the temperature by per mitting the free escape of heated air, as hereinafter described. In one side of the casing is alongitudinal slit,12,through which tlhebather can pass, and this slit or opening can be closed by buckles 13, as shown, or othersuitable fastenings.-

Between the uprights 3, near the top, is journaled a shaft, 14, carrying a pulley, 15, driven from a large pulley, 16, on a drivingshaft, 17, beneath or near the bathers platform. On the shaft 14 is loosely mounted a swinging frame, 18, held from lateral movement by set-cpllars 19 at each side. Secured to the shaft 14 within the swinging frame 18 is a concaved roller-brush, 20, and on a shaft, 21, journaled in the front or lower part ofsaid frame, is secured a similar concaved rollerbrush, 22, the two brushes being driven together by means of belting 23 between pulleys 24 and 25 on their respective shafts. To the upper or. rear part of the swinging frame 18 is secured a counterpoise, 27, and to the front of the said frame is attached a cord, 28, by grasping which the bather can draw the forward part of the frame 18 down and so bring the concaved rotary brushes 20 and 22 into contact with his head. On the drivingshaft 17 is a crank-wheel, 29, by which said shaft is actuated. The drivingshaft 17 also supports a looselymounted arm, 30, which projects in a forward and upward direction, and has pivoted to its forward end a backward and upward projecting bar, 31, in the rear end of which a rotary towel-shaft, 32,. is journaled. At the junction of the arm 30 and bar 31 is a pulley, 33, and on the towel-shaft 32 another pulley, 34,'is secured. The pivoted bar 31 is provided with a longitudinal slot, 35, in

which is arranged a sliding block, 36, having bearings for a pulley, 37, and within the slot is also placed a spring, 38, one end of which bears against said block. The crank-wheel 29 and pulleys 33, 34, and 37 are each grooved to receive a connecting-belt, 39, through which the towel-shaft 32 is rotated, the arrangement of the several parts being such that the springpressed block 36 and attached pulley 37 will serve to automatically regulate the tension of the belt 39 according to the position of the adjustable arm 30 and bar 31, said arm and bar being raised and lowered, as required, by means of a cord, 40, which is attached to the rear end of the bar 31, then passed-over a pulley, 41, on the upper part of the machine frame, and provided at its lower end with a weight, 42, by which the arm 30 and bar 31 are counterbalanced and supported at any desired height. It is obvious that by grasping the cord 40 and through it raising or lowering the arm .30, bar 31, and shaft 32 the bather can readily bring into contact with any part of his body the rotating towel 43, which is detachably secured to the rotary shaft 32.

Beneath or near the machine-platform, but preferably in rear thereof, as shown, is placed a box or receptacle, 44, for holding charcoal or other absorbent'material; This receptacle is provided with a removable cover and has air-inlets at one end. At its other end the receptacle 44 communicates through a tube, 46, with the interior ofa fan or air-pump casing, 47. In. this casing is an air-pumping device that is driven by belting 48 from the driving-shaft 17 .through pulleys 49 and 50.

The casing 47 has an exit-pipe, 51, which communicates with a receptacle, 52, for absorbent material capable of drying the air. The pipe 51 is then extended in coiled form above a lamp, 53, that communicates with a vreceptacle, 54, containing any medicinal suba stance or perfume, and finally terminates in The adjustable rotary towelshaft 32 and its supports can also be readily detached from the machine-frame. The receptacles 44, 52, and

54 are each provided with removable lids to machine, (not here shown,) but which havebeen described in my former patents, above mentioned.

. With the detachable Water-proof casing or bathing-chamber 8, rotary head-brushes 20 and 22, and the air heating and medicating devices here described, the value of the machine is greatly increased by reason of the more extended and varied uses to which it can be applied.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a bathing-machine, the combination, with the machine frame and platform, of a swinging counterbalanced frame journaled in the upper part of the machine, a pair of rotary concaved brushes arranged in said swinging frame, and means for actuating said brushes and swinging frame to apply friction to the bathers head, substantially as described.

2. In a bathing-machine, the combination, with the machine frame and platform and a driving-shaft and pulley, of an arm loosely mounted on said shaft, a bar pivoted to said arm and carrying a belttightener and pulley, a rotary towel-shaft journaled in said bar and provided with a pulley, and a counter-balance for said arm and bar, substantially as described. 3. A bathing-machine comprising the platform 1, bathing chamber or casing 8,supported above said platform, counterpoised swinging frame 18, rotary brushes 20 and 22, adjustable rotary towel-shaft 32, air-purifying and airmedicating receptacles 44, 52, and 54, air-pump 47, lamp 53, and a tube, 51, connecting said receptacles and pump with the spaces within the bathing chamber or casing, substantially as described.
