WASH BOARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,646, dated June 28, 1887.

Application filed March 9, 1887. Serial No. 230,260.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, MARK A. SMITH and JOHN NURRE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boards; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or fig.

ures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wash-board embodying our improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line y g in Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line it w in Fig. 1.

Our invention relates to wash boards, and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A and B designate the side bars of the wash-board, said side bars being extended below the body of thewash-board to form the feet or supports of the wash-board. Along their inner faces the side bars, A B, are provided with longitudinal grooves O,said grooves being rectangular in form in outline in crosssection, and extend from points just below the lower edge of the body of the wash-board to and through the upper ends of the side bars. The lower ends of the grooves O are beveled downwardly and inwardly or toward the opposing faces of the side bars. These bevels, however, are not essential, and may be omitted, if preferred. The strips S, of wood, form the foundation or base for the two rubbingsurfaces F F.

The strips S are of peculiar form, their upper and lower faces being parallel plain surfaces of unequal width, the upper surface, G, being the wider of the two surfaces. front faces of the strips S are beveled or inclined from above downwardly and rearwardly. S incline downward or toward the front faces of said strips.

The faces of the body, formed as above described, are covered with zinc, Z,which conforms to the shape of the surfaces formed by uniting the single strips. Above the corrugated rnbbing-surface the usual soap boxes or receptacles, Q R, are formed. The lower one of the strips S is preferably secured in place by wire nails, and the side bars, A B, are securedto the board Y by screws to give the wash-board the requisite strength. The side bars are connected at the top by the ordinary top bar.

A wash-board constructed as hereinbefore described possesses the advantages of having two rubbingsurfaces, one of which is quite rough and is designed for coarser fabric, and the other side is comparatively smooth and is intended for the finer fabric.

The expense of the additional rubbing-surface is not great, as the zinc face is the only additional feature, the strips that form the first surface forming the latter surface also.

Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The combination, with the grooved side bars, of the body of the wash-board, formed of the separate strips S, provided with an inclined face on one side and, a face, T U, on the opposite side, said strips being seated in the grooved side bars, substantially as specified.

2. a The combination, with the side bars, grooved longitudinally in their inner faces and connected by the top bar and soap-receptacles, of the separate strips having each an inclined face and a face, T U, said strips be ing seated in the grooves of the side bars and protected by zinc coverings conforming to the outer faces of the strips, substantially as specified.
