LABEL-HOLDER FOR CARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,378, dated June 28, 1887.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ORRINO. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding labels, bills, 'or cards indicating the contents, destination, &c., of a car on the same, and has for its object to provide an adjustable holder adapted to be adjusted to hold labels, bills, or cards of different dimensions.

It consists in certain novelty in the construction and arrangement of the various parts, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation of a part of the door or other portion of a car provided with my invention, and showing a card secured in place. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line a: x of Fig. 1, dotted lines showing the retaining or clamping arms drawn back to release the card; and Fig. 3, a detail.

Referring to said drawings, A represents the side of the door or other portion of a car on which it is desired to attach a label, bill, or card.

B is a base-plate attached to the door or other portion of the car.

b are outwardly-projecting hearings on the plate B, in which is mounted a rod, 0.

D is a clamping or retaining arm rigidly secured at one end to the rod 0. Said arm is provided on its side approximate to the car with teeth d. v

E is a rod rigidly secured at one end to the arm D and extending parallel with the rod 0, and having its other end bent down and rigidly secured to said rod 0.

F is a sleeve mounted and sliding on the rod E. I V G is a clamping or retainingarm rigidly secured to the sleeve F. and having a' hook end, g, engaging with and sliding on the rod 0.

g are teeth on the side of the arm G approximate to the car. Said arm G is similar in form to and parallel with the arm I), and as it is secured to the sliding sleeve F it can be adjusted at any desired position to or from the arm D, for a purpose hereinafter set forth.

H is a spring surrounding the rod 0 and bearing against the rod E and plate 13. This spring serves .to hold the arms D and G against the side of the door or other portion of a car. I represents a card, bill, or label secured in place. To secure said label in place, the arms are first drawn back to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and the label inserted be tween the arms and car. The arms are then released, the spring H forcing them against the label. The teeth (1 and genter said label and firmly and securely hold the same in place.

To remove the label the arms are again drawn back.

The labels, bills, or cards used in cars vary in size, and by means of the movable or adjustable arm G, I am able to adjust my holder to receive different sizes of the same. When a larger label, bill, or card is used than that shown in Fig. 1, the arm G is moved to the position shown in dotted lines, or it can be moved to any point along the rod E.

A train of cars provided with my invention can be readily and quickly labeled or billed, the holders being easily adjusted to accommodate the various sizes of labels, bills, or cards used on each car.

I am'aware that label-holders for cars have heretofore been constructed with a clampingframe consisting of parallel arms hinged to a suitable base-plate and provided with a spring for holding the clamping-frame normally against the car, and this construction I do not claim, broadly; but

That I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In a label-holder for cars, the combina tion of a suitable base-plate adapted to be 'se cured to the car, parallel clampingarms hinged at one end to the base-plate and adjustable to or from each other, and a suitable spring for holding said arms normally against the car, substantially as shown and described.
