INVENTOR G. W. WYANT PATENT AGENTS This invention relates to improvements in dispensers for paper towels or other web like material and particularly to means for supporting rolls of paper towels of varying width within the dispenser.
In web dispensers such as that shown in US. Pat. No. 2,839,345, means are provided for pivotally supporting a roll of paper towelling which necessitates the use of special fitting in the ends of the sleeve on which the paper towelling is wound. This restricts the use of the dispenser to one width of roll of towelling.
The present invention consists of a simple removable support plate, located within the dispenser, on which the roll of paper towelling rests, and a pair of keeper plates or brackets mounted on the support plate adapted to locate between them the roll of paper towelling and hold the roll in proper alignment with the feed rolls dispensing the towelling.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive support for a roll of paper towelling within a dispenser.
A further object of the invention is to provide a replaceable support for a roll of paper towelling which will hold the roll of towelling in proper alignment within the towel dispenser.
A further object of the invention is to provide a support for a roll of paper towelling having adjustable bracket means to accommodate rolls of paper towelling of varying width.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed specification and the accompanying drawings, in which;
FIG. 1 is a plan sectional view of one form of towel dispenser showing the roll support in place.
FIG. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1 showing a roll of paper towelling supported in the dispenser.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the paper towel roll support showing the adjustable brackets between which rolls of varying width can be held in alignment with the towel dispensing rolls.
Referring to the drawings, the towel dispenser cabinet 5 is shown for illustrative purposes only, as the invention can be adapted to any type of cabinet dispensing paper towelling.
The cabinet 5 is in two pieces, a fixed wall mounted section 6 and a cover 7. Mounted in the lower portion of the section 6 is the towel feed roll 8 and the pressure roll 9.
The cover 7 is hinged to the section 6 and is provided with an opening 10 through which the paper towelling is dispensed.
In the cabinet 5 illustrated, there is shown crank means 11 for driving the towel feed roll 8. However, the crank means 11 can be dispensed with and the paper towel can be withdrawn in usual manner by pulling the towelling downwards through the opening 10 against the tension of the pressure roll 9.
The roll of paper towelling 12 is supported within the cabinet 5 by a removable support plate 13 inserted in the bottom rear portion of the section 6. This support plate 12 is disposed at an angle to the bottom horizontal wall 14 of the section 6 of the cabinet and has its lower horizontal edge 15 resting against the comer between the horizontal wall 14 and the adjacent rear wall 16. The upper horizontal edge 17 of the support plate 12 is at a level which is approximately tangent with the top of the towel feed roll 8 and is supported in that position by a pair of end lugs 18 engaging with end walls 19 and 20 of the section 6.
Mounted on the angled support plate 12 are a pair of brackets 21 and 22 disposed in planes transverse to the axis of the roll of paper towelling 12 and adapted to hold between them the roll of paper towelling in the desired alignment with the towel feed roll 8.
Where only one width of paper towelling is to be disposed, the brackets 21 and 22 can be permanently secured to the support plate 13 by welding or other means. However, where it is desirable to be able to dispense towelling of different widths, the one or both of the brackets 21 and 22 can be made adjustable relative to each other. For this purpose, slots 23 are punched in the plate 13 and the brackets can be secured to the plate by well known means such as b providing a threaded nut 24 welded to the upper surface 2 o the flange 26 of the brackets and by a threaded screw 27 passing through the slots 23 in the plate 13 into threading engagement with the nuts 24. Spring fasteners can also be used to secure the brackets 21 and 22 to the plate 13.
When the brackets 21 and 22 are firmly secured on the plate, one fastening means on each bracket is usually enough to hold the brackets at right angles to the axis of the roll of paper 12, However, if desired, two fastening means can be used.
In the operation of this invention the roll of towelling 12 is fitted between the brackets 21 and 22 to rest on the top surface 27 of the support plate 13 and against the rear wall 16 of the cabinet. The free end 28 of the towelling is drawn out over the horizontal edge 17 of the plate 13 and fed between the rolls 8 and 9 and through the opening 10 of the cover 7.
The weight of the roll of towelling 12, resting on the angled plate 13, ensures that there will always be tension in the towelling between the roll 12 and the feed rolls 8 and 9, resulting in a smooth and even withdrawal of the towelling from the cabinet.
When it is desired to insert a new roll of towelling the cover of the cabinet is opened and the core of the expended roll is removed and the replacement roll is fitted between the brackets 21 and 22. If it is desired to use a roll of greater or lesser width than the roll previously used, the support plate 13 is lifted out of the cabinet and the brackets 21 and/or 22 are adjusted relative to each other to a spacing to suit the width of the replacement roll. The support plate is then reinserted in the cabinet and the new roll of towelling is fitted in place in the usual manner.
