Description

UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' THOMAS JEFFERSON OATCHINGS, OF TAYLOR, TEXAS.
CHURN.
EEPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 365,364, dated June 28, 1887.
I Application filed December 22, 1896. Serial No. 222,320. (X0 model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS JEFFERSON CATCHINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taylor, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereomwhich form apart of this specification.
Thespecial object of the invention is to make certain improvements in the bowstring mechanism which has been heretofore employed, so that the churning may be easily and conveniently done by hand.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a churn and bowstring mechanism, the churn being in section to show the dasher. Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3, a detail View of dasher and stem, and Fig. 4 a similar view of the staff which carries the balance-wheel In the drawings, A represents'a base, from which rises a goose-neck standard, 13, having on the upper end a perpendicular tube, 1), and in alignmentwith the straight part of the standard an arm, b. On this arm is pivoted the four-armed cross 0, the arms cc being continuous and provided with a pivoted handle, a, while the arms 0 c are at right angles thereto, and receive the ends of the bowstring D, that passes through a hole, a, in the staff E. The cross 0 is slotted at c, to allow it to be moved up and down on said staff, which staff carries a balance-wheel, F, made fast thereto, and said staff passes through the standardtube b,and is provided at the lower end with a hollow head, 6. This head has the slot 6", open at the bottom and on the inside, and the opposite grooves, e 6 the slot-e being narrowed from 1 to 2. In the enlarged upper part of said slot 6 the solid head 9 of the dasher'stem G is fitted. This is hollow, and in the cavity carries a spring, on which rests the toe of a plunger, H, having the head h. By thus constructing the staff and dasher-stem heads and using the spring-plunger the two heads are held securely together, while they maybe taken apart in a moment, so as to lift the dasher out of the churn. The churn I and dasher K may be made of any suitable form; but I find the dasher made with two legs, Iclc, connected integrally at the top by an arch, k,
to the middle of which the stem is attached,
to work with great efficiency.
The operation is as follows: Turn the balance-wheel until the staff winds up the string. Then press the handle with a quick movement and raise the hand. The power exerted by the hand will cause the staff to turn with the balance-wheel, whose momentum will wind up the string in the opposite direction. The hand is pressed on the lever-handle again and the same operation takes place, the dasher being alternately revolved in an opposite direction at each pressure upon the l6"1-llitlldl6. The handle is pivoted so as to prevent the necessity of stooping on the part of the operatoras he moves it up and down. It may be thrown up out of the way when not in use.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
The staff-head 0, having the slot 6 narrowed from 1 to 2, and opposite inside grooves, e '0 in combination with a dasher stem head, 9, conforming to the recesses in the head and carrying a spring in an upper cavity thereof, a pluuger,'H, having its toe resting upon said spring, and operative mechanism, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS JEFFERSON CATCIIINGS.
