Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MCCUIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sourlake, in the county of Hardin and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumping-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumping jacks for oil wells and the like, and it has for its object to produce a device of simple and improved construction which may be very readily set up for operation in connection with a well which is located at a considerable distance from the source of power whereby the pumping mechanism is actuated.
A further object of the invention is to produce a pumping jack of very simple and effective construction which may be very easily leveled and mounted in position for operation.
A further object of the invention is to produce a pumping jack which, while thoroughly effective in operation, will be so inexpensively constructed that it may be furnished at a cost materially less than that of pumping jacks as now ordinarily used.
With these and other endsin view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the improved pumping jack in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as seen at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the top or cap portion of the device. Fig. 5 is a detail view in side elevation, enlarged, of the pumping wheel or sheave, together with the operating lever. Fig. 6 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 6-6 in Fig. 5.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings the'frame of the machine is composed of uprights 15,preferably four in number. These uprights, which may be constructed of metal or other material, may behingedly connected at their upper ends with a cap piece 16 by means of pins or bolts 17 said cap piece being provided with equidistantly disposed notches 18 for the reception of the upper extremities of the uprights. By this construction the frame may be folded in small compass for convenience in transportation, and it may be easily and quicklyset up and leveled at the mouth of the well where it is installed.
Two of the frame bars or uprights which are contiguouslydisposed are provided with boxings 19, 20 in which shafts 21, 22 are supported, said shafts being utilized to support grooved wheels orv sheaves 23, 24, said sheaves being supported approximately in the same vertical plane.- The sheave 23 mounted on the uppermost shaft 21 is utilized as an ordinary guide sheave. The sheave 24von-the lower shaft 22 is the actuating wheel of. the pumping mechanism.
Connected with the sheave 24 at the circumference thereof is one end of a flexible element, such as a chain or cable 25, which is guided over the sheave 23 and connected at its other end with the pump stem or polish rod 26, which latter operates in the customary manner in the well tubing, a portion of which appears at 27.
It is obvious that in setting up the machine for use, it should be so arranged that the guide sheave 23 will be positioned in such a position that the descending portion of the flexible element 25 will be axially disposed with respect to the pump casing, so that a straight upward pull will be exerted on the pump stem when the latter is lifted, thereby avoiding all undue friction.
Fulcrumed on the shaft 22 adjacent to the operating wheel 24 is a lever 28 which is connected adjustably with the operating wheel by. means of a pin or key 29 passing transversely through said lever and wheel. The latter is provided with a plurality of perforations disposed circumferentially, as seen at 29', in order to enable the lever to without danger of being misplaced or lost.
To complete the connection a cotter pin 82 may be provided to engage a transverse aperture in the pin or key 29.
The lower end of the lever 28 is provided with a plurality of apertures 33 for the attachment of an operating cable 34: which is guided to a convenient source of power, such as an ordinary walking beam constituting a part of the power plant which may be located at a considerable distance from the well.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood.
It will be seen that I have produced a pumping jack of extremely simple and effective construction which may be readily set up at the mouth of a well and which may be easily and quickly transferred from one well to another. The lever 28 when actuated by the cable 34: will serve to rock the operating wheel, thereby alternately winding and unwinding the flexible element 25, thus alternately lifting the pump stem and the load connected therewith and permitting the same to drop gravitationally, the length of the stroke being determined by the point of attachment of the operating cable 3-1 with the lever. The flexible element 25 may be lengthened or shortened so as to effect any desired adjustment of the pump stem by removing. and replacing the pin or key 29, the wheel 24 being turned to effect the desired adjustment with respect to the lever.
The general construction of the device is simple, and it has been found thoroughly effective for the purposes for which it is provided.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a pumping jack, a portable collapsible supporting frame comprising a plurality of uprights, and a cap member with which said uprights are hingedly connected, some of said uprights being provided with bearings, and shafts supported therein, a guide sheave supported on one shaft, an operating sheave supported on another shaft, a pump stem, a flexible element connected with the operating sheave and guided over the guide sheave to the pump stem with which it is also connected, the descending portion of the flexible element being in axial alinement with the pump stem, and means for imparting a rocking movement to the operating sheave. e
2. In a pumping jack, a supporting frame, a shaft, an operating sheave supported for rotation on the shaft, a lever fulcrumed on the shaft, an arm having an eye engaging the shaft, and a pin or key carried by said arm and adjustably engaging the operating sheave and the lever operatively connecting the same.
