CRANK AND LEVER.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1915..
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, LOUIS D. Knrswn'r- 'run and lVrLLIAM S. ROBERTS, citizens 0f the United States, residing at Denton, in the county of Doniphan and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Cranks and Levers, of which the following; is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rllhis invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in cranks and levers and has for a primary object to provide novel and improved means for con verting rotary movement into reciprocatory movement.
Another object is to provide mechanism of this character which will be of extremely simple construction and highly efficient and effective in use.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more` particularly set forth in the specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and in which,
Figure 1, is a side elevational view of an embodiment of our invention applied to a pump of ordinary construction. Fig. 2, is a front elevational view of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3., is a top plan view of the upper portion of the invention as herein disclosed.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate correspon ding;r parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the base which is formed in sections positioned upon opposite sides of a pump 2 and above the platform 3. each section having a semi-circular recess 4 formed in one side to accommodate the pump 2 and the sections 1 being' clamped together by the clamp bolts 5 or other suitable means. l
One of the sections 1 is considerably longer than the other section and proiects bevond the 'platform 3, the purpose of which will presently appear. This section 1 is braced bv means of the bra cine.` bars 6 which have their opposite ends bent` ask shown at 7, one of the bent ends of each bar 6 beine; secured upon the platform B while the other is secured to the long member 1 near its projected end.
Suitable bearing members 9 are provided upon the opposite ends of the upper face of the long member 1 to receive the crank shaft 8 and support the same above said long member 1, the ends of the shaft project ing beyond the base member 1 and one projecting end of the shaft being bent to form the crank portion 10 while the drive wheel 11 is secured upon the opposite end of the shaft. The shaft 8 is also provided with a central crank portion 12, the purpose of which will presently appear.
Secured to each of the crank portions 10 and 12 of the shaft 8 are the lower ends of the pitman rods 111. The upper ends of the pitman rods 14: are connected by the arcuate connecting member 15 which has a vertical central opening4 to receive the reciprocating member 18 of the pump. The opposite ends of the arcuate member 15 are connected with the upper ends of the pit-man rods 14.- by bolts 16 or other suitable means. The central upwardly extending collar 13 is provided upon the arcuate member 15 around the central opening of the latter and the transversely extending pin 17 is positioned through this collar and through the reciprocating member 18 of the pump. Thus it will be seen that as the drive wheel 11 is rotated by suitable power. to rotate the shaft 8. the pitman rods 14 are operated to move the arcuate member 15 and thus raise and lower the pin 17 to reciprocate the reciprocatinnr member 18 of the pump 2.
While we have shownthe preferred embodiment of our invention. it will be understood that we do not wish to be limited to this exact form, as minor changes in the details of construction mav be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is A device of the class described comprising the combination with a pump including a reciprocating pump rod, of a cross head having a central opening to accommodate the reciprocating pump rod while the opposite ends of said cross head are directed downwardly, said cross head being also provided with a lateral sleeve aroundthe central opening and adapted for engagement around the reciprocating pump rod and dis- In testimony whereof we hereunto affix 10 posed in a direction away from the pump, our signatures in the presence of two wita pivot member extended through said nesses.` sleeve and reciprocating pump rod, pitman rods rigidly connected with the extremities LOUIS D' KEISWETTER' of the Cross head, and a crank shaft pro- 'WILLIAM S' ROBERTS' vided with operating means, said pitman Witnesses: rods being operatively engaged with the C.
