v Improvements in Ghurns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertai us to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersand figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in churns; and it has for itsobject to provide a device by means of which the churn-body may be firmly held when in use, and may be readily moved from place to place when so de sired. It also aims to provide a device by which the churn-body may be easily removed from the inclosing and supporting frame for the purpose of removing the butter and cleaning the body. These objects I attain by the use of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is aplan view, of my improved device; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the movable platform upon which the churnbody rests.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A desighates the base of my improved churn-supporting frame, which .is preferably rectangular in plan view and provided at its corners with the legs; a, upon which it is supported when at rest. erect the posts or standards B,which are suit= ably braced by cross bars or beams b, as shown. The churn-body rests upon and is supported by the base, and the operating mechanism is mounted upon the posts or standards, as will be hereinafter more fully referred to. At a convenient distance above the base, at the front and rear of the frame upon the standards or posts B, I provide the rock-shafts C, journaled in bearings a, secured upon said posts. The

rotated to throw the crank-arms up or down, as may be desired. The pitmen D are made of such a length that when the crankarms are raised the casters (1 will be off the floor and the frame will be resting on the legs a; as shown in Fig. 1; but when the crank-armsare thrown down the casters will rest upon the floor and the frame be elevated therefrom, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The base consists of the end sections, E, secured rigidlyin place, and the movable or sliding section E,which slides upon cleats e, formed on the inner edges of the rigid end sections, as-will be readily understood upon reference to Fig.4. The churn-body F rests upon this plat-form or sliding section and fits between the pins or stops f thereupon. The said sliding platform is provided with a caster, G, at its inner end, and its outer end is slotted near its opposite side edges, and the legs of a U- shaped bar, H, are pivoted within these slots and carry casters h at their lower ends. The shoulder of the U shaped bar H is provided with a suitable handle, it, by means of which the bar can be turned, so as to raise the casters from off the floor or lower them thereto, as may be desired. This U-shaped bar also serves as a convenient means for applying the force necessary to withdraw the platform from the base in order to remove the churn-body.

The other end of this pitman is connected to a double-crank shaft, M, which is journaled upon the front of the frame near the upper ends of the posts. This pitman may be connected directly to the crank-shaft M; but I prefer to connect it thereto by means of the rods I, which may be cast integral with said shaft, or keyed or otherwise rigidly secured thereto, as the dasher is thereby more rapidly vibrated, and the churning consequently more quickly accomplished.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that when the drive-wheel is operated its mo tion will be communicated to the pulley J and tiy-wheel K, and through the pitman L and double-crank shaft )I to the dasher crosshead, the pitman and double-crank shaft c011- verting the circular motion of the other parts into a vibratory or oscillating motion. The drive-wheel may be operated by hand by means of the handle 1, or by means of the treadle Q. at the base of the machine connected to the drivewhcel by a pitman,
It is thought that the uses and advantages of my device will be readily understood from the drawings, taken in connection with the foregoing description, without a further detailed reference thereto.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A platform for supporting churns, comprising a pair of rigid sections and a movable section supported by said rigid sections, the said movable section having a fixed caster at one end, and provided at its other end with a swinging frame carrying one or more casters, substantially as described and shown.
2. The combination of thebase, posts erected thereon, legs rigidly secured thereto, rockshafts mounted on the posts, and pitmen de pending from said rock-shafts and below the base, and carrying casters at their lower ends, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
