FIRE-BACK AND ANDIR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Io. 365,360,- dated .Tune 28, 1887 4Application filed March 4, 1887.

To all whom. it may concern: i

' Be it known that we, HENRY F., BAYNE and JOHN DWYER., citizens of the United States, residing at Ruston, in the county of Lincoln and State of" Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Backs and Andirons for Fire-Places, of which the following` is a specification.

Our invention relates to an improvementin ro lire-backs and andirons for lire-places; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be niorevfnlly set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.- I

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, partly in horizontal section on the line x a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the and- 2o irons.

A represents the reback, which is made of cast or wrought iron and of suitable size and thickness. The front side of the fire-back is provided with a'vertical series of grooves or 2 5 corrngations, I3, and at the lower side of the fire-back are formed two forwardly projecting downwardly-inclined feet, C, the function of which is to bear upon the hearth, and thereby cause the re-loaek to t snugly against the 3o back of the lire-place, and also prevent the iireback from tilting forward in the fire-place.

` The eorrugations or grooves B reduce the weight of the fire-back, and thereby render it cheaper, and they serve a useful purpose in bracingand strengthening the hre-back and preventing the same from becoming warped and twisted by the heat. The'said grooves or corrugations also form vertical lues on the front side of the fire-back, to permit a free pas- 40 sage of air between the lire-back and the burning fuel at all times, and thus promote active combustion. They also serve to radiate the heat more effectnally.

From the front side of the fire-back, at a suitable distance from the bottom and side edges thereof, project two pairs of ears, B', between which are pivoted the rear ends of Serial No.2l9,7l1. (No model.)

the horizontal bars E, which, together with the fronts or standards F, constitute the firedogs or andirons. The said fronts or stand- 5o vards are provided on their rear sides with downwardly extending wedge shaped dovetailed grooves G, and the front ends of the pivoted bars E are provided with similarlyshaped tongues H, which are adapted to fit snuglyin the grooves G, and thereby secure the fronts or standards F rmly to the front ends of the bars.

From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the andirons are piv- 5o oted or hinged to the front side of the firebacir, and thereby the said andirons may be raised and folded upwardly against the fireback, in order to entirely clear the hearth of obstructions and permit the same to be read- 6 5 ily swept. The standards or fronts F of the andirons are detachable from the bars E, in order that the latter may be folded snugly against the front side of the nre-back, and its fronts or standards may be then packed against 7o the front side of the tire-back, .thus enabling the entire contrivance to be confined in a very small space, and thereby reducing the cost of transportation.

In order to prevent the lower edge of the tire-back from slipping forward on the hearth, We provide each of the inclined feet C with a downward-extending stud or pin, I, which is adapted to enter a suitable recess madein the hearth, as shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. 'Ihe combination of the lire-back, the'bars E,having their rear ends pivoted or hinged to the front side ofthe fire-back, and the fronts or standards F, detachably secu red to the front ends of the'bars E, substantially as described.

2. The fire-back provided at its lower edge with the forward-extending feet G,to restupon the hearth, for the purpose set forth, substan- 9o tially as described.

3. rIhe fire-back having the forward-extending feet C at its lower end to rest upon the hearth, the said feet being provided with the depending studs or pins to enter recesses made in the hearth, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.

4. The combination of the hre-beek, the bars E, hinged to the front side thereof and provided with the tongues H at their ends, and the standards F, provided with the grooves G, to receive the tongues H, substantially as specified.
