D. SNYDER.
OHURN.
No. 365,205. Patented June 21, 1887.
UNTTE STATES ATENT FFICE,
DAVID SNYDER, OF BLOOMVILLE, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,205 dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed October "25, 1886. Serial No. 217,123, (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1', DAVID SNYDER, aeitizen of the United States, and a resident of Bloomville, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I dohereby declare that the following is a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying; drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to the former.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of churns in which two dashers having laterally-projecting fingers or strips are reciprocated in opposite directions within the churnbody with the fingers intermcshing; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a rectangular box or casing, tapering slightly toward the upper end and forming the churn-body, and the open top of this body is covered by means of a larger removable cover, 3, and a smaller cover, 4, which is held in place upon the top by means of turn-buttons 5, having hooked inner ends, 6, engaging lugs'or studs 7 upon the upper side of the small cover. A shaft, 8, is journaled in bearings 9 and 10 in the upper ends of two of the side pieces, one of the bearings, 9, being formed with a short upwardly-extending groove, 11, in the side piece, while the other bearing, 10, is provided with a longer upwardly-extending groove, 12, in the block 13, forming the hearing. The shalt is provided with a downwardly-projecting arm, l t, at the end near the bearing having the short slot, and this arm is provided with a numberoflaterally-projecting fingers, 15. A lever, 16, is pivoted upon the shaft near the other bearing, projecting with its upper hair dlc-arm, 1.7, through a slot, 18, in the edge of the small cover, while the downwardly-projecting portion of the lever is provided with a number of laterally-projectings fingers, 19, meshing into the spaces between the fingers ol the arm 14. The rock-shaft is provided with an upwardly-projecting short arm, 20, projecting through the slot in the cover of the churn, and this arm is pivoted at its up per end to the lower arm of a small lever, 21, l'ulerumed upon a stud, 22, projecting from an upwardly-projecting bracket, 23, upon the smaller cover, and having a longitudinal slot, 24L, at its upper end, by which it is pivoted to a stud, 25, projecting from the side of the handlearm 21. It will now be seen that as the handle-arm is rocked the arm having the fingers will be rocked inside of the churnbody, and the other arm will be rocked in the opposite direction on account of the upwardly-proiecting short arm being pivoted to the lever having the slot at its upper end, so that the contents of the churn will be thoroughly agitated by the two dashers rocking in opposite directions. The motion of rocking the lever-arm will be an easy motion for the person operating the churn, and the contents of the churn may be inspected whenever de sired by simply removing the larger cover; and it will be seen that the dashers having the laterally-projecting fingers may be easily cleaned, all parts of the said dashers being easily accessible. The bottom of the churnbody is preferably slightly concave, to correspond to the are described by the lower ends of the dashers.
Having thus described my in vention,I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a churn, the combination of an upwardlytapering rectangular elm rn-bod y, a shaft journaled with its ends in bearings at the upper ends of two of the side pieces, and having a downwardly-projecting arm nearone end provided with laterally-projecting fingers and having an upwardly-projecting short arm, a lever pivoted upon the end of the shaft, and formed with an upwardly-projecting handlearm and with a downwardly-pugecting arm having laterally-projecting fingers meshing with the fingers ot' the other arm, and a lever fulerumed upon a stud projecting from a In testiniony that I claim the foregoing as bracket upon the cover of the body andpivoted my own I have hereunto affixed my signature at one end to the upper end of the upwardlyin presence of two witnesses. projecting short arm, and having a longitudi- 5 nal slot at its upper end pivoted and'sliding Witnesses:
upon a stud upon the handle-arm, as and for OLVIs WILSON," the purpose shown and set forth. J. R.'WILSON.
DAVID SNYDER.
