BERNARD LINGOFF, ISAAC SEFF, AND HENRY GlINTHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y;
LIGHTING DEVICE FOR CIGARETTE-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,595, dated June '7, 188'].
Application filed February 17, 1887. Serial No. 328,011. (No model.)
To a.ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, BERNARD LINOOFF and ISAAC SEFF, both citizens of the United States, and HENRY GUNTHER, a citizen of the German Empire, all residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have inventednew and useful Improvements idBoxes for Cigarettes and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes for cigars, cigarettes, and other objects, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l'is a perspective view of a box. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a cover. Fig. 3 is'a perspective view of a 'box and of a cover. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of a box and cover. 7
Similar lettersindicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings the letter A designates a box. 13 is a cover. To the box is secured one or more strips or supports, 0, of cloth, paper,
or other suitable flexible material. The strip or support 0 is provided with tinder or combustible material D. The-combustible or igniting material D is preferably placed on the strip or support 0 in sections, so that each section of combustible material can be ignited and consumed independently of the other sections. One end of the strip 0 is secured to the box A, and the other end of the strip is left free. i
The cover B is provided with a suitable friction-surface or igniting surface, E. By bending the free end of the strip 0, as seen in Fig. 3, and rubbing the combustible material -D on the friction-surface E, the combustible material D will be ignited. A cigar or cigarette can thus be lighted.
A convenient arrangement is to have the number of combustible sections D correspond to the numberof cigars or cigarettes in the box A, so that each cigar or cigarette from said box will havea lighter provided for such cigar or cigarette.
As the combustible sections D can be lighted said strip 0 may be secured intermediate of its ends, and the ends of the strip 0 be left free to engage the ignitingsurface E. The drawings show a box with a sliding cover. Such boxes are compact, durable, and easily handled. A suitable combustible material can be ob tained by mixing the following substances in the following proportions: chlorate of potassa, six parts; sulphuret of antimony, two to three parts; glue, one part. For the friction-surface mix amorphous phosphorus, ten parts; sulphuret of antimony or peroxide of manganese, eight parts; glue, three to six parts, and spread the last-named composition thinly upon the box or support, so as to form the friction-surface E.
The strip 0 is advantageously made of asbestus, which, besides being flexible, is also non-combustible.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with a box, A, of a strip or support, 0, provided with igniting material D and secured at one of its ends to the box A, and a cover, B, provided with an igniting or friction surface, E, substantially as set forth.
2. As a-new article of manufacture, a box for cigars or cigarettes having secured to it one end of a strip, 0, (one or more,) provided with igniting material D, arranged in sections and having a cover, B, provided with an igniting or friction surface, E, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a cover, 13, having an igniting or friction surface, E, of a box, A, and a strip, 0, secured at one end to 0 being adapted to engage the igniting or In testimony whereof we have hereunto set [0 friction surface E, substantially as set forth. our hands and seals in the presence of two 4.
