This invention relates to clothes hangers for hanging articles of clothing and especially for hanging trousers, skirts and the like.
The clothes hanger according to the invention is of the kind formed from a single length of wire bent back upon itself so as to form two arms extending substantially parallel to each other, one of said arms having attached to its center a supporting hook and one of said arms having at its free end a catch in which the free end oi the other of said arm engages, in the manner of a safety pin, to latch the free ends of said two arms together to retain them in close parallel relationship. in use the two arms of the hanger are unlatched from each other and a pair of trousers, skirt or the like is hung over one of said arms, the two arms then being again latched together so that the trousers, skirt or the like is held between the two arms. Preferably one or other of said arms is so shaped that where the two arms are latched together, with a garment held therebetween, said garment is firmly clamped or gripped between said arms.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved clothes hanger of this kind whereby several hangers with garments hang thereon can be hung on a supporting rail or the like in close proximity to each other without the hanger hook or a part thereof pressing against the garment hung on an adjacent hanger and thereby creasing or otherwise damaging said garment.
With this object in view the invention consists of a clothes hanger of the kind described wherein the arm having a hook attached at its center is provided with a bend on each side of the point of attachment of said hook whereby said arm is provided with a central portion offset in the direction of the other arm of the hanger thereby forming a recess in which said hook is attached to said arm.
in order that the invention may be more clearly understood one particular embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
hit is a plan view of two clothes hangers according to the invention in close proximity to each other, as they would be when hung on a supporting rail or the like; and
MG. 2". is a side elevation of a clothes hanger according to the invention.
Referring to these drawings the clothes hanger comprises a single length of strong resilient wire bent back upon itself to form two arms l, in, and It, 12a lying side by side in substantially parallel relationship. One arm 2 Ila has fixed to its center, for erarnple by welding, a hook '7, 7:1 for suspending the hanger from a rail or the like and at its free end is provided with a catch it, do into which the free end of arm i, la is adapted to engage, in the manner of a safety pin, to latch the two arms ii, to and 2, 2n together in parallel relationship as indicated in full lines in lFlG. l.
The arm l, in is straight but according to the invention the arm 2, 2a to which the book 7, 7c is attached is provided on each side of the point of attachment of hook '7, "701 at points equidistant therefrom bends as indicated at ti. The arm 2 is bent towards the arm l as indicated at 3 and d whereby the central portion of arm It is offset in the direction of a m ll thereby forming a recess i in which the hook l is atta to said arm. The depth ol said recess is equal to or greater than the diameter of the wire from which the hook "i is made so that when several hangers according to the invention, with garmerits hung thereon, are suspended by the hook "i', in from a rail or the like in close proximity to each other, as shown in H6. l, the hooks 7 do not press against the garment, indicated at it) in chain dotted line, hung on an adjacent hanger and therefore do not crease or otherwise damage the garment.
in the embodiment of clothes hanger illustrated in the draw ing the bends ti formed in the arms .2, 2n such that the central portion of said arm is offset to an extent such 3' it v r ll, tic, said central offset portion or" arm ii, .a i with arm l, in and the portions of the to sides of the central offset portion will be from other.
When the clothes hanger is used, for example to han pair of trousers or a shirt, the arm 11 is uniatched from. tlt c. ch on arm 2 to the position shown at l in dotted lines and t trousers or shirt is hung over said arm which is the r latched to arm .76. Thus the trousers or ski i will clamped or gripped between the central ollset portion or 2 and arm ll while the spacing between the two arms on opposite sides of said offset portion will leave ample room for accommodating for example folded-in portions or a skirt.
it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular embodiment herein described and illustrated but modification can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
