JACK-SCREW SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,373, dated June 7, 188'7.
\p lieation tiled lht'vmhcr G, 1836. Sriinl .\'o. 2 10,15 0. tNomodcl.)
tie it known that I, l\ll(!ll.\ In. ltnrscn, a cit-t zen of the 'tlnit'ed States, residing at iul'falo, in the county ot' Erie and State M New York,
3 have invented eertain new and-useful-l|nprovt1*- ments in Jack-Screws; and l dohereby declare the following to be av t'ull, clear, and exaet description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanyingdrawingsaml to letters or figures of refer nce marlccd thereon, which t'ornra. part el this specification.
The object of. my invention is to provide a jaclesorew by men n; ol' \l'llltflhjYllll the same motion of the-operating lever, a body one be 'ii'tisctl or lowered 'wiee the distance traveled bvthe body when operated upon by the ordinaryjacleserew. i
To that end my im'entioueonsists ot a certain improved construction and arrangement of parts, all of which will be more Fully hereinafter described and claimed.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertieal sect ion oi my improved juek. Figs. 2 and I; are detached plan views of the oseillating catches and ratehet-wheels, showing their plan of operation. Figs. t and 5 are auelevation and plan, respectively, of the flanged eollar. l igs. ti and T are detached detail views and Fig. 8 is a mtnlilieation.
" Iteterning to the drawings, (t is the tubular standard having the base 0-. its .top is pro-- vided with the sermv-threaded aperture a; ]v)ianietrieally arranged upon the inner wall 01' the tubular standard 1! are the two vertical ribs It a.
I; is a screw threaded cylinder, having upon its upper end and integral therewith the ratchetwvhecl It". This eyliuder b is adapted for engagement with the screw-tbreaded, aperture (1." ol' the standard a, in which it isto be raised and lowered. i
e is a tubular eollar with the annular flange 0' at its top, and the keeper 0 with grooves 1: a on either side. 'lhis eollar lits loosely within the eylinder Ii, its annular tlange n resting upon the top'ot the ratch t-wheel lr'ot the Cylinder 1, and th grooves e" 1:" of its keeper a loosely engaging with the yertieal ribs (Bu/ ot the slandard u to keep it l'ron ttllnin c is a lug upon the inner wall e t thp collar 0. 17 is a. screw-threaded rod operqitzhig within the tubular collar 0, at the top 01' which is rigidly secured the notched circular plate 0'. whieh forms the top of the jack. side of the serew'threadcd rod It is the vertical groove ll, adapted. for the reception oi the lug r." in the eollar o.
e is a ratehetwhecl in engagement with the screw-threaded red (I just over the annular llange dot the collar c. A casing], incloses the ratehctf-wheels I) and c, at the outer end ofwhich is the leverhandlef.
The red (1 passes loosely out of the top of the casing], and the sercw-tlu"e'.nl ed cylinder It extends loosely through the lower wall of the same casin Atoue side'ot' the casing in its lower portion is pivoted the oscillating, plate having the two pawls ygaud the log 1 The pawls gg are adapted for engage ment alternately with the ratchet-wheel I), being held in either ollsuch positions by the spring-pressed catch it, as clearly seen in Fig. 3. I; is a similar oscillating plate, having pawls In I." and lug If, with Spring-pressed catch it. The pa-wls 1; 1: are adapted for engagement; alternately with the ratchet-wheel The operation of the parts just described i. as follows:
'loraise the notched plate (1, and with it; the body placed upon it, the left-hand pawl, of the plate 9 is placed in engagement with the ratehet-wlu-cl I), as seen in Fig. 3, and the righ-thaml pawl, Ir, otthe plate 7.: is placed in engagement with the ratelnvt-wheel c, as seen in Fig. 2, both pawls being held in place by the spring-catches l1 and If. As the leverhandlef is turned to the right, aml with it the easing f, the ratehet-wheel c is turned to the right also by the pawl 1.1, and as theserewthreaded rod passing through the ratchet wheel cannot turn, by reason of the lug c, it,
rises in such ratehet-wheel, carrying wit-h it the object;- plaeed upon the notched plated. As the lever-handlef is thrown back to the left, the ratchet-wheel 1) upon the screwthreaded eylinder his turned by the pawl 5 which Causes the cylinder to turn in its serewthreaded socket a in the standard a, and at the same time to rise, carrying with it theup per parts of thejaeh and the object; to be lift-ed thelehyf The annular flange cof theeollar Along the t each oscillating plate are engaged with the c,bcing interposed between the ra tch et wheels,
I direction.
To lower the object, the opposite pawls of ratchet-wheels, and as they then operate in the opposite directions the moving of the lever handle serves to lower the rod d and cylinder 1) in the same manner as they were before raised.
In Fig. 2 I show a pirated oscillating plate, in, having the two hooks in m adapted for alternate engagement with the ratchet-wheel eythcir functions being to hold the ratchetwheel e aud'pr'event its rotary movement when the lever-handle f is moved, thus throwing the entire lifting of the jack upon the other ratchet-wheel, b, when desired. A springpresscd catch, M2, (see Fig. 1,) serves, in connection with a lug or plate, at, to hold such plate in either of its positions.
.In Fig. 8 I have shown a modification of the form already described, in which a and. are hollow tubes or cylinders, the cylindenaforming, with its enlarged lower portion, a, the base of thejack, and the cylinder 0, with its upper serrated edge, 0, forming the bearingpiece for the object;- to be raised. Each of the cylinders a and 0 is provided with the screwthreaded apertures a and 0, and each has the interior vertical ribs a a and 0 0", arranged diametrically opposite each other. 12 and q are exteriorly screw-threaded tubes, engaging with the screw-tln-caded apcrturesa and o" ofthe tubes n and 0. At the adjacent ends of these tubes 1) and q, and integral therewith, are the ratchet-wheels p and q.
Passing through'thc tubes p and q is the rod 2*, having the central washer, 1'', which lies be tween and separates-the ratchet-wheels p and q. The keepers r and r, secured to the rod at; each end by the nuts 1", engage with the vertical ribs a a and 03 o to keep the rod from turning.
The ratchet-wheels p and q and washer 7" are incl-seed in a casing, s, similar to the casing f in Fig. -.l which casing s has a lever-handle,
shown and described.
closed in a common casingprovided with a single lever-handle, the movement of which operates one of the ratchet-wheels in each direction, all combined substantially as shown and described.
2. In a liftingjack, the combination, with the screw-threaded cylinder 1), havingintegral hatchet-wheel b, adapted to be moved up and down in the tubular standard a, the screw threaded rod d, adapted to be moved up and down in the ratchetwheel c, engaged thcrcwith, and the tubular collar 0, having the annular shoulder c.between the ratchet-wheels b and c, and having a keeper at its lower end engaging with vertical ribs in the hollow standard a,- of the double spring-pressed catches and plates h and g, engaging independently with each ratchet-wheel, the pawls and ratchetwheels being inclosed in a common casing and operated by a si nglelever-handle secured t o the casing, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a lifting-jack, the combination, with the screw-threaded cylinder 1), having integral ratchet-wheel b, and adapted to be moved up and down in the tubular standard a, the screwthreaded rod (1, adapted to be moved up and down in the ratchet-wheel e, engaged therewith, 5
and the tubular collar 0, having the annular shoulder 0 between the ratchet-wheels b and e, and having a keeper at its lower end engaging with vertical ribs in the hollow standard a, of the double spring-pressed catches and plates I and g, engaging independently with each ratchet-wheel, and the double-hooked plates in m" in, for the purpose stated, the pawls, ratchet-wheels, and hooks being inclosed in a common casing and operated by a singleleverhandle secured to the casing, substantially as In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
