UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. PIERCE, OF GLENXl OOD SPRINGS, COLORADO.
HlNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,290, dated June 7, 1887. Application filed November 12:1886. Serial No. 218,735. CModel.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn H. P11311012, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen- Wood Springs, in the county of Garfield and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and Ido hereby declare the following to be such afull, clear, and exact description of the same as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in door-hinges, and aims to provide a hinge of such construction that the doormay be opened in either direction and may be set at any desired angle across the threshold without changing the hinges.
The invention consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figures 1 and 2 are I side elevations taken from opposite sides; and
Fig. 3 is ahorizontal sectional View of a door provided with my improved hinge, the several positions of the door being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the hinge.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the door, and B the door-frame.
G designates the hinge, which is composed of two leaves or sections, D E, similar in size and construction to the ordinary hinge in common use.
Fis a leaf or section of a length equal to the thickness of the wall or door-janib, and G is an arm or leaf which extends from the outer edge of the leaf or section Fto thccentral line of the door, at which point they are pivotally connected thereto. The several leaves or sections of the hinge are flexibly connected by means of pintle-pins I-I, inserted through loops or eyes formed on their contiguous edges.
The section D is secured to the door-frame in the usual manner by screws or similar devices, and is provided in its upper edge with anotch, d, thepurposeof which will presently appear. The section E is provided in its upper edge with a similar notch ,c, which is formed at such a point that when the two sections are brought together the notches (l cwill coincide.
The outer end of the section G is provided at its upper and lower corners with the vertical extensions g, which serve as journals for the hinge.
I I are bearing-plates. which are secured rigidly to the side of the door on its central line. These platcsI are arranged aboveand below the end of the section G, and have the perforated arms 6, which extend outward therefrom at right angles and are formed integral therewith. The journals g of the section G engage the perforations of these extensions 2', and thereby pivotally connect the hinge to the door. That edge of the door which, when the door is closed, is adjacent to the door-janib to which the section D of the hinge is secured is provided with recesses J to receive the sec tion E of the hinge. These recesses are faced with metal, so as to reduce the wear thereon and give a neat finish to the door.
K designates a catch which is secured to the door on the side opposite to that to which the end section of the hinge is secured and at the upper-end of the recess J. This catch consists of a plate, K, secured to the door, and a hook, K, projecting from the edge of the plate at its upper end. This hook K engages the notch c in the upper edge of the section E and enters the notch d in the edge of the section D, thus holding the door to the hinge and at the same convenient height.
In operation, when it is desired to operate the hinge in the same manner asthe hinges now in common use, the catches K are allowed to engage the upper edges of the hinge-seetions, as before described, when the door will jmnb, of the hinge comprisinga series of flexib1y-connected sections, one end section being fixedly securedto the door-jainb and the other one pivotally secured to the door on the central line of the same, and the catches secured to the side of the door and projecting beyond the edge thereof to engage the edge of one of the intermediate hinge-sections substantially as specified.
