Description
Sept. 3, 1963 G. L. BOONE 3,102,636
TOWEL HANGER Filed Nov. 4. 1960 INVENTOR.
George L. Boone Buckhorn, Chearham 8 Blore ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,102,636 TOWEL HAYGER George L. Boone, 1591 Sherman Ave., North Bend, (l-reg.
Filed Nov. 4, 1960, Ser. No. 67,235 1 Claim. (Cl. 211-45) The present invention comprises a towel hanger for use with a cabinet closure such as a door or drawer.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a towel hanger which may be alternately positioned so as to expose the towel in front of the cabinet for ready use, or to conceal it within the cabinet.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the foregoing character which is easily assembled of readily available materials and is quite inexpensive.
The objects and advantages of the present invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing taken in connection with the following specification wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated and described.
In the drawings,
FIG. 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of a cabinet having the present invention associated therewith, the towel being exposed for ready use;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 with the towel concealed within the cabinet;
FIG. 3 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, taken substantially along line 33 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale, taken substantially along line 4-4 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 5 is a partial view in elevation of the device disassociated from the cabinet closure.
The illustrations disclose the invention in association with a cabinet closure such as the flush door ill mounted upon a cabinet 11 by means of hinges 12, the door being provided with a handle 13. It is to be appreciated that the present invention may be used in association with other cabinet closure members such as drawers, provided the closure member is movable from a closed position to an open position to such an extent as to allow operation of the device of the present invention.
The present invention comprises, in its preferred embodiment, a tripartite hinge consisting of a mounting member 14, a hinge member 15, and a towel supporting member 16, the three being pivotally connected together by hinges including parallel hinge pins 17 and 18. The mounting member is preferably in the form of a small plate provided with screw openings 20 whereby the mounting plate may be secured to the inner surface 21 of the cabinet closure by means of screws 22. The mounting member is so secured that the pivotal axis of the pin 17 lies closely adjacent to and parallel to the upper inner edge of the closure member 16*. In such position the hinge member 15 may depend inwardly inside of the cabinet, thereby concealing a towel 25 draped on the towel supporting member 16, or may be swung arcuately forward to project horizontally across the upper surface of the closure member, as seen in FIGS. 1 and 3, whereby ice a towel supported on the supporting member 16 will be available for ready use. The mounting member 14 and hinge member 15 are so designed that the hinge member 15 may swing through an arc of at least one hundred and eighty degrees with respect to the mounting member. If necessary the upper edge of the door or other closure member may be notched, as illustrated at 26, to permit closing of the closure member when the hinge member is swung forwardly. The hinge member 15' preferably has a length substantially greater than the thickness of the closure, so that the towel supporting member 16 may swing in spaced relation to the front surface of the closure 10.
As illustrated, the towel supporting member 16 comprises a short hinge plate 27 to which is amxed a stirrup shaped ring 28, but it is to be appreciated that any other form or style of towel support may be secured to the hinge plate 15.
A most desirable location for use of the present invention is in association with a cabinet closure door beneath a sink, so that a kitchen towel is readily available for use at all times when the housewife is working in the kitchen, yet may be instantly flipped into a position of concealment when desired.
Having illustrated and disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention permits of modification in arrangement and detail. I claim as my invention all such modifications as come within the true spirit and scope of the following claim.
I claim:
A towel hanger for use with a door comprising a mounting member, means for securing said member adjacent to: the upper edge of said door, a hinge member having two ends with one end connected to said mounting member for swinging movement of at least about an end of said mounting member, said hinge member having a first surface adapted to abut the upper edge of said door and a second surface adapted to abut the mounting member, means on said mounting member to hold the hinge member in spaced relation from said door, a hinge plate having two ends with one end connected to the other end of said hinge member, which plate is normally in a vertical position and spaced from the door when the hanger is swung from a first position where the first surface of the hinge member abuts the upper edge of said door to a second position where the second surface abuts the means on the mounting member, and hanger means connected to the other end of said hinge plate for supporting a towel in spaced relation to said door.
