PUTTY-KNIFE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,159, dated May 31, 1887.

The handle may be of any suitable construction for the purpose. I will describe it as shown.

1 1 are metal frames, cast with opening or openings 2, for the sake of lightness, and with a recess, 3, to receive a side piece, 4, which may be of wood or any other suitable material. These framesl are connected together at the butt-end by rivets 5, or other means.

6 is a pintle-stud, which may be in one piece with one of the frames 1, or may be attached thereto in any manner, and' which extends through the other of the frames 1.

7 is the blade, having an orifice, 8, fitting the pintle 6, which passes through it and forms the hinge on which it turns in opening and closing. The pintle has an axial screwthreaded socket, in which turns the screw 9, by which the ends of the plates 1 are forced against the end of the blade 7 to hold it firmly in the handle. The screw-head has a thumbpiece, 10, by which it maybe turned.

11 11 are ribs upon the blade, which enter grooves 12, made in one of the frames 1, close to the pintle-stud. The interlocking device of the ribs 11 and grooves 12 holds the blade firmly to place when the screw 9 is turned home. Thus the blade may be held fast, whether folded into the handle, as seen in Fig.

I, or inposition for use, as shown in Fig. II.

It is preferred that the pintle-stud 6 shall be of a separate piece, as shown, from either of the frames 1, so that it may be drawn out for the easy removal of the blade for the substitution of another of different form or size; but it may be made in one piece with one of these frames or fixed thereto, as before described.

As a modification, the rib l1 and groove 12 may be transposed, the rib being on the frame and groove in the blade.

I claim as my invention- 1. The putty-knife having a blade turning on the pintle stud, having a screw-threaded socket and a clamping-screw working in the socket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, in a puttyknifc, of the side parts, 1 4, of the handle, the screw-socketed pintle, the clamping-screw, and the interlocking rib and groove 11 and. 1.2, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the handlehaving its sides connected at the butt-end, a blade jointed between the other ends of the sides, interlock ing rib and groove, respectively, on theblade and one of the sides, and a screw forcing the sides againstthe blade, substantially asv and for the purpose set forth.
