GUN-CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,951, dated May 3l, 1,887.
Application tiled J anunry 26, 1887. Serial No. 225,594. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM EDWARD F0 n'- STER, of the town of Lawrcncetown, in the county 'of Annapolis, in the lrovince of Nova Scotia, Canada, mechanic, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cleaners for Cleaning B reech-Loadin g Fire-Arms; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 'are sectional views of the cleaners, the conncctingcord being shown in side elevation.
Fig. 1 is a transverse section of one' end. The cleaner is'conical-shaped. The letter A indieatesascrewfbolt, passing the entire length of this part ofthe cleaner' and fastened olrthe base of the cone by a nut, while at the other end the rim of the bolt is attached to the cord marked l) I).
The letter B indicates layers of leather, circular in form, which are placed on the screwholt as washers between the parts 4marked G C C. The letters G C G indicate circles of 1ub. ber, which are placed in the figure at the intervals indicated and above each layer of leather. lt is intended, also, that the letter 'B should indicate solid rubber, the circles C C G iu that case being merely cut from such rubber.
Fig. 2 represents a ('.ransversescction of thel other end ofthe cleaner. The letter` A' indicates a screw-bolt, fastened at theouter end by'` to form one complete surface. The-letter F' represents a snap-hook passing through the eye of the screw-holt -A. The letter G indi entes a spiral-coil of lead for Weighting the end of the' cleaner, Fig. 2. It passes around and is firmly attached to the cord marked D D. rlhe letters D D indicate a cord connecting the'two ends of the cleaner, Figs. 1 and 2.
'lhe ends of the cleaner', Figs. l and 2, are intended to he of different sizes, according' to the bore of the breech-loader.
The cleaner is used .by saturaiiug the end, Fig. 2, with water for washing the barrel, then detaching it and dropping` the weighted end of the cord through the barrel, then rcattaching the sponge and drawing it through. A rag or cloth, dry or saturated with oil, is then wound around the end,Fig. 1, the weighted end, Fig. 2, is dropped through the barrel, the sponge being tirst detached, and the end, Fig. 1, is thenl drawn through the barrel.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by patentl 1. A cleaner for fire-arms, consisting of' a porous sponging and a scraping head counected by a iiexible cord, said cord being 'Weighted at its extremities and detachably connected to one of the cleaner-heads.
2. A cleaner for firearms, consisting of a sponging and scraping head connected by a flexible cord,.\vhich is weighted at its ex" trcmities and detachably connected to one of the heads, the scraper consisting of a series of beveled disks, separated by interposed washers and clamped upon a rigid spindle, vas set fort-hi 3. A cleaner for fire-arms, consisting of a scraper and sponging-head connected by a ilexible cord having its extremities weighted and detaehably connected at one end to one of the heads, the sponging-head consisting of a conical elastic body having a covering of sponge or like porous material, as set forth.
