GUN CLEANER. No. 387,410. Patented Aug. '7, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
CYRUS FOSS GILLE'ITE, OF SPAR'IA, VISCONSIN.
GUN-CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,410, dated August '7, 1886.
Application filed January 21, 1888. Serial No. 261.435. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CYRUS Foss GTLLETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GunOleaners5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to gun-wipers, and the improvements will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a wiper constructed according to my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of a modification of the wiper at tached to the ramrod, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the wiper removed.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the main wiper, which is composed of a central longitudinal rod, a, and wiping or frictiondisks b, which are separated by mel[allie washers.
rIhe rod a is provided at one end with a head or enlargement1 d, having an eye, e, for the attachment of the draw-cord, as will be presently explained. Upon this rod is placed a tip, j; of wood or other suitable material, which has its forward end reduced, as shown, and is retained upon the said rod by means of the said head e.
b indicates rubber disks, there being five shown in the presentinstance and all of an equal diameter. These disks are of a similar or slightly greater diameter than that of the in ternal diameter of the gun-barrel, so that when moved by force through the barrel the frictional Contact will beincreased by the resilient action of the disks. These disks are placed upon the rod a, as shown, the foremost one bearing against the rear or enlarged end of the wooden tipf, and they are held at suitable intervals by means of the metallic washers g. The rod a is also threaded at one end, as shown at h, for the reception of a nut, c', whereby the disks and washers may be retained in proper position thereon. It will be observed that the metallic washers are of less diameter than the rubber disks, so that when the device has been drawn through the said barrel the edges of the disks may give alittle.
B indicates the draw-cord, which may be of leather or other suitable strong material, and is designed to draw the scraper through the barrel.
Secured to one end of this cord is a weighted point, D, which may be formed from lead or other suitable metal, and so shaped as to freely enter the barrel of a gun and pass through the same. The opposite end of this cord is provided with a hook, E, whereby the said cord may be attached to the scraper through the medium of eye in the rod a.
F indicates a cloth or rag which is passed over the point D, and drawn down upon the cord and scraper. Thus it will be seen that when it is desirable to clean out a guirbarrel it is only necessary to first attach the scraper to the hook E of the cord, and then place a rag, as F, over the point. rlhe weight D is then dropped into the barrel at the proper end until it comes out at the opposite end, after which it is grasped by the operator and drawn with such force as to bring the scraper A through the barrel and the rag therewith.
A device of this construction is very effective in its operation, and can be manufactured at a very Small expense.
Instead of using the rag and pull-cord for cleaning the gun at times-for instance, when home or before going to the eld-I may use a ramrod having a ferrule, G, on its smaller end with an internally-threaded socket, and screw the threaded end of the rod a therein. It will thus be seen that I have a cleaner such as represented in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s 1. The improved gun wiper herein described, consisting, essentially, of the rod having a head at one end and threads at its opposite end, the removable tip f on the headed end, the rubber disks all of an equal diameter and arranged on the rod, the washers for spacing the said disks, the drawcord attached to the rod, and .the weighted pointon the free 5 end and threaded :lla its opposite end, the tip ou the headed end, the rubber disks of equal diameter, and the washers for spacing the disks on the rod,` substantially as specied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CYR-US FOSS GILLETTE.
Vituesses:
WM. M. GRAHAM, S. N. DICKINSON.
