CLYDE 53 WEST ATTORNEY OCCASIONAL CARD Conventional occasional and gift cards normally comprise a single sheet of paperboard having a scoreline suitably formed thereon to fold and superimpose a cover panel over a back panel. Such cards may accompany a gift for occasions such as birthdays and weddings. It oftentimes proves difficult for the donor to select a suitable card which aptly expresses his sentiments towards the donee. Furthermore, when practical gifts such as standard household items are given, standard cards tend to be somewhat impersonal.
An object of this invention is to overcome the above, briefly described problems by providing an inexpensive, durable and multipurpose occasional card which is highly personalized in nature. The occasional card comprises a flat base portion having a cover portion hingedly connected thereto by a scoreline. The card forms a receptacle between such base and cover portions adapted to retain an insert card therein to earmark a particular gift.
Other and more specific objects of this invention will become apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a partially sectioned, perspective view of an occasional card embodying novel aspects of this invention therein;
FIG. 2 is a front elevational view of the FIG. 1 occasional card with a cover portion thereof opened to expose an insert card positioned therein;
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of a paperboard blank utilized for forming the FIGS. 1 and 2 occasional card;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of a blank utilized for forming the insert card illustrated in FIG. 2; and
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a modification of the FIG. 1 occasional card.
FIGS. l-3 illustrate a first occasional card embodiment comprising a flat base portion 11. The occasional card is preferably rectangular with the upper and lower edges of its base portion being disposed in parallel relationship. As will be hereinafter more fully explained, the occasional card preferably has a folded insert card 12, positioned in a receptacle formed therein, to earmark a personalized gift.
Referring to FIG. 3, the occasional card may be formed out of a single paperboard blank comprising a back panel 13, a front panel portion 14 and a cover portion 15. The cover portion is hingedly connected to the front panel portion by a scoreline 16 whereas the front panel portion is preferably hingedly connected to the back panel by a common scoreline 17. A cover panel 18 is hingedly connected to the back panel by a scoreline 19, disposed in parallel relationship with respect to the other scorelines.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the card may be formed by securing front panel portion 14 and cover panel 18 to the back panel by conventional adhesive illustrated at 14' and 18', respectively. The front panel portion is preferably secured to the back panel only at laterally spaced marginal edge portions thereof to at least partially from a pocket portion of a receptacle further formed by cover portion 15. Thus it can be seen in FIG. 2 that insert card 12 may be suitably inserted into such receptacle to be firmly retained therein and normally covered by the cover portion.
The cover portion is preferably trapezoidal-shaped with the base thereof being defined by scoreline 16 and an upper free edge thereof being disposed in parallel relationship with such scoreline. Cover panel 18 of the base portion has trapezoidalshaped cutout means formed thereon to be coincident with the free edges of the cover portion for accommodating the normally closed cover portion therein.
The outer free edges of the cover portion, scoreline 16 and the outer edges of front panel portion 14 define means simulating the perspective view of a box, exteriorly of the card (FIG. 1). Indicia means 22, formed on the cover and front panel portions, simulate a ribbon and bow for the box with the bow being positioned on the cover portion. Cover panel 18 may also have indicia means 23 formed thereon to indicate the particular occasion for which a gift is given.
As shown in FIG. 2, indicia means or printed lines 24 are formed on back panel 13 of the base portion to simulate a perspective view of the interior of the box. Thus, when cover portion 15 is closed the occasional card will afford the appearance of the outside of a gift box (FIG. I). When the cover portion is opened (FIG. 2) the box will also be opened to expose the insert or gift card 12 therein.
Referring to FIG. 4, the paperboard or like constituted insert card comprises a one-piece blank having front and back panels 25 and 26, respectively, hingedly connected together at a common scoreline 27. A personalized verse or the like indicia means 28 may be printed on the back panel, whereas gift article indicia means 29 (FIG. 2) may be printed on the front panel.
FIG. 5 discloses a modified occasional card embodiment wherein a one-piece blank comprises a base portion 11:: consisting solely of a flat back panel. A front panel portion 14a is secured to the back panel in the same manner as front panel 14 is secured to back panel 13 of the FIG. 1 embodiment. The front panel portion is attached to the back panel at a common scoreline positioned at the lower edge of the back panel or base portion.
A cover portion 15a is hingedly connected to front panel portion by a scoreline 16a. The cover portion is rectangular with an upper free edge thereof terminating short of the upper edge of the base portion. It should be noted in this embodiment that suitable markings are formed on the rectangular cover portion to define triangular-shaped areas 200 and 21a thereon.
Thus, somewhat different means are provided for simulating the perspective view of the exterior of a box on the card. In addition, the FIG. 5 embodiment may employ the various indicia means and insert card employed in conjunction with the first described embodiment.
I claim:
I. An occasional card comprising a flat base portion having upper and lower edges,
a cover portion hingedly connected by a scoreline to said base portion between the upper and lower edges thereof, and
means forming a receptacle between said base and cover portions adapted to retain an insert card therein, the outer edges of said cover portion, said scoreline and the outer edges of a front panel portion of said base portion, having said cover portion hingedly connected thereto, defining means simulating the perspective view of the box.
2. The invention of claim 1 wherein said occasional card is rectangular with the upper and lower edges of said base portion being disposed in parallel relationship with respect to each other.
3. The invention of claim 2 wherein said cover portion is trapezoidal-shaped with the base thereof being defined by said scoreline and an upper free edge thereof being disposed in parallel relationship with respect to said scoreline and the upper edge of said base portion and terminating short of such latter upper edge.
4. The invention of claim 3 wherein said base portion comprises a flat back panel and a cover panel secured to said back panel, said cover panel having cutout means formed thereon coincident with the free edges of said trapezoidal-shaped cover portion for accommodating said normally closed cover portion therein.
5. The invention of claim 4 wherein said occasional card is formed on a one-piece blank and wherein said base portion further comprises a front panel portion secured to said back panel, said front panel portion hingedly connected to said back panel by a scoreline positioned at the lower edge of said base portion and further hingedly connected to said cover portion by said other scoreline.
6. The invention of claim 1 wherein said base portion comprises a flat back panel and a front panel portion secured at laterally spaced marginal edge portion thereof to said back panel to at least partially form a pocket portion of said receptacle.
7. The invention of claim 6 wherein said occasional card is formed of a one-piece blank, said front panel portion hingedly connected to said back panel by a scoreline positioned at the lower edge of said base portion.
8. The invention of claim 1 further comprising an insert card positioned in said receptacle.
9. The invention of claim 8 wherein said insert card is formed from a one-piece blank having front and back panels hingedly connected together by a scoreline.
10. The invention of claim 9 wherein said front panel has gift article indicia means formed thereon and said back panel has verse indicia means formed thereon.
11. The invention of claim 1 further comprising indicia means formed on said cover and front panel portions simulating a ribbon and bow, said how positioned on said cover portion.
12. The invention of claim 1 further comprising indicia means formed on said base portion and normally covered by said cover portion for simulating the perspective view of the interior of said box.
13. An occasional card comprising a flat base portion having upper and lower edges,
a cover portion hingedly connected by a scoreline to said base portion between the upper and lower edges thereof, and
means forming a receptacle between said base and cover portions adapted to retain an insert card therein,
said occasional card being rectangular with the upper and lower edges of said base portion being disposed in parallel relationship with respect to each other, said occasional card being formed of a one-piece blank wherein said base portion consists solely of a back panel and a front panel portion secured to said back panel and hingedly connected thereto by a scoreline positioned at the lower edge of said base portion, said front panel portion further hingedly connected to said cover portion by said other scoreline, said cover portion being rectangular with an upper, free edge thereof terminating short of the upper edge of said base portion, and indicia means formed on said cover portion, said other scoreline and said front panel portion defining means simulating the perspective view of a box.

Claims (13)

1. An occasional card comprising a flat base portion having upper and lower edges, a cover portion hingedly connected by a scoreline to said base portion between the upper and lower edges thereof, and means forming a receptacle between said base and cover portions adapted to retain an insert card therein, the outer edges of said cover portion, said scoreline and the outer edges of a front panel portion of said base portion, having said cover portion hingedly connected thereto, defining means simulating the perspective view of the box.
2. The invention of claim 1 wherein said occasional card is rectangular with the upper and lower edges of said base portion being disposed in parallel relationship with respect to each other.
3. The invention of claim 2 wherein said cover portion is trapezoidal-shaped with the base thereof being defined by said scoreline and an upper free edge thereof being disposed in parallel relationship with respect to said scoreline and the upper edge of said base portion and terminating short of such latter upper edge.
4. The invention of claim 3 wherein said base portion coMprises a flat back panel and a cover panel secured to said back panel, said cover panel having cutout means formed thereon coincident with the free edges of said trapezoidal-shaped cover portion for accommodating said normally closed cover portion therein.
5. The invention of claim 4 wherein said occasional card is formed on a one-piece blank and wherein said base portion further comprises a front panel portion secured to said back panel, said front panel portion hingedly connected to said back panel by a scoreline positioned at the lower edge of said base portion and further hingedly connected to said cover portion by said other scoreline.
6. The invention of claim 1 wherein said base portion comprises a flat back panel and a front panel portion secured at laterally spaced marginal edge portion thereof to said back panel to at least partially form a pocket portion of said receptacle.
7. The invention of claim 6 wherein said occasional card is formed of a one-piece blank, said front panel portion hingedly connected to said back panel by a scoreline positioned at the lower edge of said base portion.
8. The invention of claim 1 further comprising an insert card positioned in said receptacle.
9. The invention of claim 8 wherein said insert card is formed from a one-piece blank having front and back panels hingedly connected together by a scoreline.
10. The invention of claim 9 wherein said front panel has gift article indicia means formed thereon and said back panel has verse indicia means formed thereon.
11. The invention of claim 1 further comprising indicia means formed on said cover and front panel portions simulating a ribbon and bow, said bow positioned on said cover portion.
12. The invention of claim 1 further comprising indicia means formed on said base portion and normally covered by said cover portion for simulating the perspective view of the interior of said box.
13. An occasional card comprising a flat base portion having upper and lower edges, a cover portion hingedly connected by a scoreline to said base portion between the upper and lower edges thereof, and means forming a receptacle between said base and cover portions adapted to retain an insert card therein, said occasional card being rectangular with the upper and lower edges of said base portion being disposed in parallel relationship with respect to each other, said occasional card being formed of a one-piece blank wherein said base portion consists solely of a back panel and a front panel portion secured to said back panel and hingedly connected thereto by a scoreline positioned at the lower edge of said base portion, said front panel portion further hingedly connected to said cover portion by said other scoreline, said cover portion being rectangular with an upper, free edge thereof terminating short of the upper edge of said base portion, and indicia means formed on said cover portion, said other scoreline and said front panel portion defining means simulating the perspective view of a box.
